'Global March to Jerusalem': Israel's borders on high alert as huge protests loom

RAMALLAH, West Bank – Palestinian organizers are calling for massive demonstrations on Friday to mark Land Day, an annual event that commemorates the killing of six Arabs who were protesting Israeli land policies on March 30, 1976.

Tens of thousands are expected to participate in what organizers have billed a "Global March to Jerusalem." The plan is to have protesters from neighboring countries march up to the Israeli border to "demonstrate solidarity with Palestinians and to protect Jerusalem," according to organizers.

The future status of Jerusalem is at the heart of the Palestinian movement and is the theme for the global Land Day. East Jerusalem is regarded as the likely capital of a future Palestinian state.

Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, a Palestinian activist, explained some of the reasoning for the march to NBC News during a recent interview in Ramallah.

"In light of the total failure of the peace talks, and given the Israeli destruction of the last potential two-state solution through settlement activities, we realize nothing will change unless we change the balance of power," said Barghouti.  He added that organizers are trying to achieve that through this "non-violent peaceful resistance."

For Palestinian farmer, a constant reminder of Israeli occupation

For many Palestinians, Land Day is an annual opportunity to demonstrate that Palestinians inside Israel, the West Bank and Gaza are united and share common goals.

This year will mark 36 years since Israel’s practice of expropriating Arab land to build Jewish settlements provoked protests by Arab residents in the Galilee and Negev. In addition to the six people who were killed, over 100 wounded during the ensuing violence. Since then Palestinians have commemorated March 30 as Land Day and have turned the day into a general protest against what they see as discriminatory practices by the Israeli government. So it seemed an appropriate date for activists to hold their march.

"The Global March to Jerusalem represents three things," said Barghouti. "First of all, the unity of the Palestinian people, and their struggle to achieve freedom and end occupation, for Palestinians in and out of Palestine; second, it affirms the centrality of the issues of land and Jerusalem to achieving Palestinian freedom; and third, it provides international solidarity with the Palestinian cause."

'Absolutely peaceful'
The organizers plan to send convoys of vehicles to approach Israel's borders simultaneously from four neighboring countries: Jordan, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon. According to organizers, more than 600 institutions from 64 states have been involved in planning the march. Protests are also planned outside Israeli embassies in Europe and Arab countries. Organizers say they are hoping for 1 million people to demonstrate in various protests all over the world.

"The event is meant to be a non-violent protest that will include parliament members, citizens and religious figures from all over the world – including Jews, Israelis will also protest with us," Saied Yaqin, one of the march organizers, told NBC News.

Organizers of the march insist the protests will be orderly.

"This march is absolutely peaceful and non-violent, and we will try everything possible to prevent violence," Barghouti said. "Of course, if they use violence against us, the world should protest. But the march is absolutely peaceful and nobody will try to provoke violence."

But Israeli Defense Forces aren’t taking any chances.

A statement released by the IDF said they are "prepared for any eventuality and will do whatever is necessary to protect Israeli borders and residents."

Israel has also issued a stern warning to Arab countries and Palestinians to refrain from approaching the border.

Soldiers along the border have been instructed to be on high alert and they will reportedly have crowd-dispersal means at the ready and will also deploy marksmen. According to a Haaretz report, a so-called "skunk" device is being prepared that sprays a harsh-smelling substance at demonstrators.

Jordan, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon plan to march to the borders with Israel to prove what point? They are of Islam and Israel is not? In that part of the world known as the sea of insanity Israel is the last bastion of sanity and Islam wants it banished from the face of the earth as they make all Islamic countries look bad by comparison.

The USA had a 10 year war in Iraq and an ongoing 11 year war in Afganistan + 911. Israel continues to build settlements in Jerusalem and the occupied territories. Israel has always refused a UN nuclear inspection. Is there something wrong with this picture. Anyone, anyone?

The march for peace in the name of peace what better way to show solidarity. Will Israel fire upon people marching in peace without guns or will they march with them . Millions of marchers all marching in the name of peace with wire cutters would overwhelm Israel. Anyway you look at it they will fall victim to The Awakening.

Two state solution? MSNBC, you mean three state solution, don't you? Isreal and two Muslim states - one run by Hamas and one by Hezbolah. Asian, African and Arab Muslims only know how to hate and kill. And when they are not hating and killing the 'infidels', they hate and kill each other. Israeli society has its extremes, too - but what is their inner conflict 'kill count'?

There is a majority of Muslims who live in peace with their neighbors in this world, but not where social progress is repressed by brainwashed Madras (educated?) fanatics, financed by the Saudis (our friends). Ha!

Israel’s control over a disputed territory whose final status will be determined by negotiation evokes misleading analogies with historical events like the Nazi occupation of France during World War II, or the Soviet occupation of the Eastern bloc during the Cold War. But that analogy is false: Germany and Russia invaded and then occupied sovereign nations defined by international borders. Israel ended up in the West Bank territories as the result of a defensive war against aggressors. Israel’s continuing control is a defensive necessity, just as after World War I the traditional launching pad for German aggression against France, the Rhineland, was demilitarized and subject to Allied military control. Indeed, the Allied decision to evacuate their forces from the Rhineland was one of many mistakes that led to World War II. Given that central Israel is only 9 miles wide from the Mediterranean to the West Bank, it is understandable that it is cautious about losing control over the traditional Arab launching pad for invasion.

“Palestinian homeland” is another particularly loaded and historically false phrase. “Palestine” was the name of a multi-ethnic Roman, Byzantine, Arab, and Ottoman province, not a people. The name itself reflects Rome’s attempt to alter historical reality with language. After the destruction of Israel as a political entity and the scattering of its people in the 2nd Century A.D., the Romans renamed the territory “Palestine” after the Philistines, a people that once lived in the region but had been absorbed into other groups for centuries. Thus the Romans subjected the Jews to a collective damnatio memoriae, the practice of erasing all public mention or record of an enemy to the Roman state––exactly what the Arabs have been trying to do to Israel for the last 60 years by denying its historical ties to the land.

Likewise, just as the Romans named the land after a people that no longer existed, so too calling the current Arab inhabitants “Palestinians” perpetuates a similar historical fraud. What constitute a people are a shared language, culture, customs, traditions, and history distinct enough to set them apart from others. By these criteria, there is no such thing as “Palestinians.” The average Arab living in Israel or the West Bank is no more significantly distinct from one living in Syria, Jordan, or Egypt than a resident from California is significantly distinct from a resident of Arizona or Nevada. Whatever differences that do exist do not trump the more important similarities, and reflect rather the refusal of surrounding Arab nations to integrate their Arab brothers into their own countries, instead constructing a Palestinian identity based on victimhood, humiliation, and failure.

That’s why before 1967, no one talked about “Palestinians” as a distinct people deserving a homeland, and the Jordanians did not create a Palestinian state when they controlled the West Bank. That notion of a “Palestinian state” arose after the Arab defeats in the 1967 Six Day War and the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Once those debacles made it clear the Arabs could not destroy Israel by force, the tactic shifted to making the issue one of national self-determination as a way of chipping away at Israel’s territorial integrity and international support.

Finally, the claim that the territory inhabited by Israel is the traditional “homeland” of those whom we call Palestinians is false. The majority of Arabs who have lived or are living in Israel and the West Bank are there as the descendants of conquerors, colonizers, and immigrants. Many of them came after Zionists began in the 19th Century to develop a mostly desolate, neglected land and to create economic opportunities. History and archaeology tell us that the territory comprising Israel and the West Bank is the traditional homeland of the Jewish people, not a mythical Palestinian people.

Then there was that "longest half-time ever." Two thirds of the fans left, while the others dozed off. You'd think that after the whole team lazed on the bench sucking Gatorade for what seemed like 1,878 years, they'd come back with strength and vigor. But no! Still sucking. Gone through all their 2nd and 3rd stringers! Now calling on other teams to come play for them! And still keep stalling on third and fourth down! Wankers.

It is really too bad that the european Jews that imigrated to Palestine in the late 19th century didn't go there with peace and love in their hearts. Instead, they followed the teachings of Theodor Herzl aka "The Father of Israel", the founder of zionism. The zionist plan was to get rid of any indigenous population, spirit them across the boarder to other countries by providing them jobs in those other countries but explicitly denying employment to them in the land they basically defraud the palestinians out of, the farmers that had cultivated the land for thousands of years. The plan was to trick the land owners, make them believe that the Jews were offering them way more money than the land was worth, but the Jews knew better. They also knew the plan was that they would NEVER EVER allow land to be sold to a non-jew.

Theodor Herzl, the founder of Zionism and the "Father of Israel" wrote in his diary:

"We must expropriate gently the private property on the state assigned to us. We shall try to spirit the penniless population across the border by procuring employment for it in the transit countries, while denying it employment in our country. The property owners will come over to our side. Both the process of expropriation and the removal of the poor must be carried out discretely and circumspectly. Let the owners of the immoveable property believe that they are cheating us, selling us things for more than they are worth. But we are not going to sell them anything back." (America And The Founding Of Israel, p. 49, Righteous Victims, p. 21-22)

I ask...all of you Israel supporters, who are the extremists? The Jews who say "God gave us this land", or the ones fighting back to regain what was stolen from them?

It is too bad that the Jews didn't invite the inhabitants of Palestine to join them in creating a country, now, we are facing the consequences.

The structural genocide of the palestinians has to stop. They were not asked by the U.N. what they felt about the creation of Israel in 1948. The U.N. (aka the U.S.) blindly supported the creation of Israel because the guilt that was masterfully manipulated after WWII.

The Germans committed the henious crimes against the Jews, not the Palestinians. The Jews should have been given German land for their country, not steal it from a people that had nothing to do with the Holocaust. Now the irony is the Jews are committing crimes against the Palestinians in the name of God, the Holocaust, and "Security".

The blind support for Israel has two fronts; 1. The Israeli lobby. But more importantly 2. The evangelical Christians in this country who blindly support Israel because their religion forces them to support Israel no matter what. If forces them to support Israel to legitimize their belief that Jesus will only return if Israel exits.

Now I ask all you Israeli supporters, who are the extremists?

MOre support for the above comment:

Key fact: In the late 1800s a group in Europe decided to colonize this land. Known as Zionists, they represented an extremist minority of the Jewish population. Their goal was to create a Jewish homeland, and they considered locations in Africa and the Americas, before settling on Palestine.

At first, this immigration created no problems. However, as more and more Zionists immigrated to Palestine – many with the express wish of taking over the land for a Jewish state – the indigenous population became increasingly alarmed. Eventually, fighting broke out, with escalating waves of violence. Hitler's rise to power, combined with Zionist activities to sabotage efforts to place Jewish refugees in western countries, led to increased Jewish immigration to Palestine, and conflict grew.

The correct solution would be to return to one state, which is the original zionist solution started by Begin and Airle Sharon in the 1940s. What they wanted was to assimiliate the migrnt workers, later known as Palestinains into their culture, then destroying their history from within, so to speak.

              From the above article:

"Stop buying into what Sharon claims Israel "has to do" and look at what Israel has actually done. The maps tell the story of a nation eager to conquer lands which do not belong to it. Israel has invaded virtually every nation it shares borders with, including Syria and Lebanon, and as the map above shows has almost conquered Palestine and is ready to "ethnically cleanse" the region. Far from being the poor victimized society desperately defending itself Israel likes to pretend it is in order to wrest more money from Americans, Israel is in fact the most militarily aggressive nation in the region."

We could of paid for the Iraq War and had cheap Petroleum products for the next thirty years with war concessions, But oh no we cannot do that says the jack-wagon in the White House, He was to busy getting Homosexuals rights to Marry to Deal with Iraq?

USCitizen, your username says it all...you should change it to "typicalignorantUScitizen". The "jackwagon" in the white house has absolutely NO control over the price of oil, any more than he can control the price of gold. Oil is the blood of industry, and will ALWAYS sell at the price of the highest bidder, regardless which "jackwagon" sits in the WhiteHouse

Dan he abandoned any chance for Oil Concessions? It was his call. You are the only one being ignorant.

Get a clue, Citizen..."oil concessions" would still be sold at the market rate, you and I would still pay the same rate, that's how free enterprise works...be glad I dont own the oil, I'd definitely raise the price!! Oil IS gold, the only reason it sells as cheap as it does is because those who DO own it know that we'll kill for it if they wont sell at a reasonable price!!

yeah you are right they need to learn how to deal with people they can't isolate themselves from the rest of the world because they think they are better than everyone else. Fanaticism is what it is and fear driven, mankind must over come their fear and hate of eachother better now than later. Welcome to the New world Order !

Israel can no longer hide its egregious behavior. International crimes repeatedly committed describe Israel's forty-five year occupation of Palestine. If political leaders of the world will not take action, it is the right and responsibility of the people to take action. Nonviolence protest in the traditions of Gandhi and Martin Luther King are the most effective method of keeping the focus on Israel and its violations of law and moral values.
