Outrage is continuing to spread over a U.S. soldier’s rogue shooting of 16 Afghan civilians in the middle of the night. Local officials say the shooting spree killed nine children, three women and four men.
While the news slowly trickles through Afghanistan, U.S. officials are rushing to contain the damage from the tragic attack, promising to punish whoever is behind the incident.
But there are fears that the attacks could spark even more violence from an Afghan public already angered by the U.S. and NATO presence in their country.
NBC’s Atia Abawi is in Kabul covering the story. Earlier today she answered reader questions about the attack and the Afghan reaction to it.

My questions never get answered...
me neither. But the questions that were asked today were very good.
Sad.... There's no valid reason for our troops to be in Afghanistan. Our military is not designed to be an occupying police force. Why won't our leaders be held accountable for their continued efforts at interfering in others countries? It's obvious our troops are being used as pawns to help establish oil rights and trade with those camel dung countries that truly don't like our country only our foreign monetary aid.
Why are we still there? I didn't see an answer to that one....
Because our leadership is a bunch of cowards and will continue placing America's sons and daughters in harms way for no other reason than the hopes of establishing foreign oil rights and trade with those who only desire foreign monetary aid.....
To provide Pentagon jobs to the glut of low IQ unemployed violent trailer trash males who love guns and killing.
"Military men are dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns for foreign policy." ~ Henry Kissinger
Have you ever strapped on combat boots, fought for anything, been shot at, been almost blown up by an IED, If you answer yes then you can talk about the soldiers if not shut the hell up
My question is how much are the Taliban raving idiots and tyrants? You could step on their shoe and they would vow revenge and death to the USA and Israel. They seem like the most psychotic people in the world.
The Afghans are apoplectic if one of thiers is killed by American forces, slightly upset when their own are blown up by the Taliban, and non-chalant when killing Americans, Seems like there is something wrong with that picture. I do not believe that this atrocity should be reflective of the brave men and women in our US Military. This guy should be court-martialled and sentenced to life in Ft Leavenworth. The Afghans have no concept of justice or a fair trial , so the idea of them conducting a trial would be akin to letting a 4 year old be president (???)
Indeed, this murderous attack on defenseless villagers was really carried out by the Taliban. A U.S. soldier had nothing to do with it. Thank you for pointing the finger at who the psychotic killer really was.
or a community organizer, eh Bill?

Still waiting to see the physical evidence before passing judgement. Oh thats rights the bodies were hastly creamated for religious purposes. This sounds like a propaganda back story & our government needed a escape goat. An American Soldier has been found guilty even by his fellow citizens, shouldn't he at least recieve a fair trial before being condemned & abandoned. 3 tours working on 4 to protect our freedoms & Constituation, Shame, Shame, on anyone who consider him/herself an American.
Yes, this thug in uniform ought get a military trial and then be handed over to the country of the mostly 16 children and women your American hero murdered in cold blood. Oh, and btw, he confessed.
As we hear the attacks on the President by Law Makers and even Americans it's interesting how one dare question President Bush when we attacked Afghanistan because of 9/11. As Bush quickly moved on to invading Iraq leaving soldiers with little to nothing in Afghanistan for years, as even the Bush Administration along with the Carlyle Group as they got Unicol employee Karzai to be the President. Now after Obama withdrew our troops from Iraq, only the troops cheer. Now attention again is made to Afghanistan and as the stress continues on our troops and Obama sets a date of withdraw, here come that attacks. FYI we have had many soldiers break under stress and one got elected to Congress after his charges with War Crimes and torture. So many soldiers have problems after coming homes but ignored. As one soldier said War is Hell, but it seems Americans and Law Makers are looking to invade Iran and Syria with support from the same people complaining about Obama. We heard excuses for soldiers burning the religious material of the Afghan people and now twisting the fact 16 women/children were murdered. We see murders done everyday in the US by regular people who are prosecuted and even kids being killed in school. Rumsfelts announced that 56 bombs missed their target in March 19, 2003 and accidentally killed thousands of people sleeping, as Rumsfelt said stuff happens. Americans didn't give that accident a second thought as that announcement come out. No charges were ever made and now some feel the only problem should be to bring our troops home and dismiss the crime.
NBC has done alot of reporting on our troops who have come home and if Americans would just watch and listen they will know the horror of War never really leaves as the soldiers try to adjust being home. Americans support the GOP effort to end health care while saying bring our troops home who will need the health services Americans/GOP are fighting to end. With the calls to go into Wars again, what do you expect will happen to the troops?
You are right Jackie, I don't give it a second thought.
A short history listen for those to young to know. Lt. William Callery charged with the My Lai Massacre of 504 innocent women/children. Sentenced to life in prison as a quick appeal allowed Callery to house arrest. The shock and horror soon left the headlines and Nixon pardoned Lt. Callery without and media fan fair. Callery was later asked by the UK for an interview but Callery wanted 25,000 dollars but was refused and no interview was done. Lt. Callery continued to defend his actions of out right murder but like most who live to reach 65 years old and look to meeting God. Lt. Calley told a group at an event he apologized for his action to the US and the 504 dead Vietnamese. The trail was done by the Military as the World watched to see what American Justice is about. But cover ups didn't work but a US President secretary pardoned the killer. Will President Obama do the same as Nixon or will he and the US Military stand up to Justice?
A few friends saw Game Change and most said the same thing. We were lucky Sarah wasn't the VP. Most laughed at Sarah thinking the Queen ruled England because he never know England has a Prime Minister and Parliament as a Government body. To think this was the best McCain could fine as a second in line to the office of the President is scary as even students pick the smartest kid as class President.
