Amid Israeli accusations that Iran is striking out at Jewish targets around the world, Iran’s claims that that it has made major strides towards mastering the production of nuclear fuel and threats to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz, tensions between the two countries are at an all-time high.
NBC News’ Stephanie Gosk is on assignment in Tel Aviv, Israel. Earlier today she answered a wide variety of reader questions about the rising tension and what people in Israel think about the possibility of an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Israelis fear an attack from Iran, but there is a heated debate over what should be done about it. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

If Israel attacks Iranian facilities wouldn't that invite rataliatory strikes against Israels nuclear facilities and potentially even it allies nuclear facilities? The last thing we need in the US are a bunch of Iranians running around attacking US nuclear facilities. Does Israel consider that risk too great? Was the lesson at Japan's nuclear power plant tsunami disaster not small enough?
How come they continue to wish for high oil prices? War? Really? What is it in fact good for? Keep it clandestine because you are accomplishing NOTHING but high oil prices. We ALL know neither of you will do anything of significance. A war? With the two of your economies? Please huh? C'mon. Stop making the oil barons more rich daily ok. Seriously just stop it. Because in the end that is all you are accomplishing. ; ]
Cheers
Either that Tsunami event was naturally ordered, or something else is trying to tell this planet something. And it could easily begin and end as abruptly.
Iran could have a major earthquake that would send it wandering the deserts for 40 years. Do they really want to rattle sabers with Allah?
If Japan came that close to sinking in the Pacific then the whole mystery of Atlantis must be that it hasn't sunk yet and all the historians must have the wrong ocean and time frame.
How many Shiites inspired terrorist attacks were there in the US and else where?
Compare it with the Saudi and Paki inspired terrorist attacks and attempts in the US, Britain and other European nations.
It will be no surprise, if Israel and Saudis managed Delhi and Bangkok terrorist attacks.
These cheap Israeli and Saudi dramas are similar to the ones staged before Iraqi wars!
And,of course, you have proof of what you just said, right?
Do Israel and Saudis give proofs?
They invent "truths" and accordingly manage "proofs."
Have WMDs been found till now in Iraq?
What does "WMD's not found in Iraq" have anything to do with your total lack of any proof that the Saudis and Israelis "managed" the Delhi and Bangkok attacks?
I gather from your response that you have no proof or anything at all to back up what you claimed in post #1.5 above!
davefromorange: WMDs and oil prices were convenient tools for Iraq wars to dance as directed by Saudis, Israel, oil companies and their lobbyists.
These Saudis and co and their puppets profited immenesly from Iraq wars though in 9/11 Saudis, Pakis and UAE, "allies on war on terror" were guilty.
These are proven and if these Saudis & co repeat similar acts with similar accusations, then all their actions are clearly part of the earlier dramas in Iraq.
You can't provide proof in for all actions as Saudis & co don't offer proofs.
Why is it that only those who oppose wars and warmongers have to give proofs?
Jonathan,
Those who make accusations against another country have the "burden of proof" upon them, regardless of which end of the political spectrum they identify with. Since, in post #1.5 above, you accused the Israelis (and the Saudis) of "managing the Delhi and Bangkok" attacks against Israeli targets, you are obligated to provide the proof of your accusations.
From all of your responses so far, it certainly looks like you have no proof what so ever of any of your claims!
Oh yippy. It's like goundhog day in real life.
The truth is nothing you can say or do can change their way of thinking. If we compare North Korea to South Korea. It's pretty much the same synopsis. Our problem is that we a very big investment in the oil fileds.
So consequently we are not going to give up . So we're pretty much a hostage. As for the religion that battle will still continue on. Personally I would think it would be our to advantage to pull away from the oil fields.
The economy situation is affecting the world . I do not see this paying off the national debt. Our presence being there bigger problem that we need to deal with at this time , Iran well continues to build weapons regardless. Unless we get our priorities right, this could be Custer's last stand. ( reference meaning us )
I guess Big Chief might be wondering What Iran does, or begins to do when they see all those. They begin to dance and sing.
The Obama administration has continually pressured Israel not to pre-emptively defend herself from the radical Islamic dictatorship in Iran that is threatening her with a nuclear Holocaust. Why does NBC support the Obama administration's efforts to enable Iran to annihilate Israel?
I think you mean pre-emptively attack. You defend yourself from an attack. When you do it first it makes you the attacker. If I see a African-American walking down the street and I "pre-emptively defend myself" because I felt threatened by his/her presence I'm pretty sure I'd be going to jail for assault. And honestly after Israel assasinating Iranian scientists it's pretty much the teapot calling the kettle black.
Some Lame Name Here,
You're comparing " apples to oranges" and your comparisons are invalid. Too bad you're not seeing the "big picture" here.
If any Israeli is killed by Iranians, then the Obama administration is to blame.
We need a special prosecutor to investigate the leak to MSNBC and NBC about the MEK affair.
If you were Irans government, hated Israel with a passion but had three countries standing in between you and the Israel border (Iraq, Arab Emirates, and "Syria": Syria who will more than likely side with Iran eventually anyway) wouldn't your best strategy be to invade now vulnerable Iraq next door with a Sunni army banding with their Sunnis forces. Once Iraqs dysfunctional goverment we put in place is secure this then puts you within closer missle range of Israel from the Iraq western border. If Syria gives the ok you could then launch a ground force from Syrian territory around Arab Emirates and attack Israel directly from the north. The best part of this plan would be Iran could at last go hand to hand combat with Israel leaving the US completely out of this next war and force NATO to make the next move if they so desire..
I know this is a pipe dream only because Israel is and always will be an instigator of war but when it comes to a single one of them shedding even a prescious drop of Jewish blood they will always come running to the US to fight their battles for them. Not because they're not capable or armed for war but because they will always be weak, cowardly, frail, whiney Jews who have never had any spine, guts or physical body strength to fight their own battles..
P.S. ....SCREW Netanyahou!!..
Yep Israel instigates war by having Iran backed Hezbollah with Syrian and Egyptian extremists launch missiles and mortars at Jewish civilians.. If the peaceful Muslims would stop bombing and kidnapping and shooting people in Israel just maybe Israel would stop trying to shell those peaceful Muslims that are manning those rocket and mortar launchers.. They claim Zionist genocide, if the Israeli military wanted to they could kill tens of thousands of people in an hour but that has not happened and that would be genocide.. Collateral damage because these idiots set up camp in a school yard or residential area to do their dirty work seems to be their own fault.. They have tried many time to have cease fires and peace talks but seem to always get bit by sneak attacks and the same old same old..
Iran will not attack Iraq because they know their communist big brother would not be able to cry foul when a coalition stomped there butts because they were the aggressor.. And there is the Sunni Shea thing so they have neighbors that hate them as well..
Jimmeez,
Seems to me that the Israelis (otherwise known as the "Jews") did a pretty good job taking care of themselves during the wars forced upon them in 1948, 1956, 1967 and 1973!
Looks like you really haven't done too much reading of history! Maybe you should first do some research before making such bogus comments!
With the Arab springs flowers wilting in Egypt and a population less tolerant of Christians and Jews sprouting does it seem wise for Israel to use threats against Iran?? The persecution of the non Muslim populations across the region is at an all time high and killings are as well.. It was termed Christianafobia as opposed to Islamafobia but if they are really doing it it seems to me that it is reality not a phobia at all.. This harder mainstream Muslim attitude from the region in general is backing Israel further into a corner and like a cornered animal will panic provoke them to violent action?? The global repercussions of a brief but intense high tech war that further destabilizes the Middle East could cascade into a tsunami and bring tensions between the US and Russia/China back to cold war era levels.. I am assuming this is why our support for Israel has seemed to slip with our current President..
Anybody that thinks the Israelis are cowards has no grasp on history. That little country beat all the countries over there by themselves. Iran will need Iraq, Syria and anybody else they can get to beat the Israelis. Assad has not played his last card yet. Somehow or another he will get a confrontation going with Israel in hopes of taking the heat off what he is doing to his own country. You can bet that Iran has plenty of troops dressed in Syrian uniforms there right now and they still cannot beat down the opposition forces. Should Israel and Saudi Arabia enter into a joint agreement, Iran is going to be beaten down. The Iranians will have to have a nuclear weapon to survive. Israel may well hit them with a pre-empitive strike, but it will be with conventional weapons. Anybody stupid enough to gas or nuc Israel will get the nuclear surprise of their lives.
Lets hope it does not come to that because far too many people have died because of the Islam-o-fascists already..
LOL Frogman. Iranians in Syrian uniforms? Where or where do you guys get the stuff? I'm thinking you must make it up after a long bender, no sleep and a lack of caffeine.
Iran is well and truly screwed. They are stuck between Israel and Pakistan's nuclear arsenals, and are (rightly) terrified of both of them. Most of the Muslim countries in the region are ruled by Sunni Muslims. Iranians, not being Arabs but Persians, have a different language, very different culture, and a different spin on the religion of Mohammad. Iranians are mostly Shiites. Sunnis and Shiites get along about as well as Catholics and Protestants did during the reformation. Sure, both sides were Christians and used the same book to justify murdering the other side, but they just couldn't seem to get along. It's like that with the Shiites and the Sunnis, and right now only the Sunnis have nuclear weapons. I should point out Osama's boys were all Sunni, the side that runs Pakistan and very likely has access to nuclear weapons through Pakistan. Shortly before we invaded Afghanistan after 911, an entire Iranian diplomatic team trying to make peace with Afghanistan was murdered by the Afghans, who are also for the most part Sunni.
So, to the East Iran is facing Pakistani nuclear weapons under the countrol of a military dictatorship, with Sunni Islam extremists all through the secret police and covert military units of Pakistan. It seems very likely they were hiding Osama from us, and they hate the Iranian Shiites almost as much as they hate Israel.
To the West, Iran is terrified of Israel. Regardless of what you think of Israel's policy of bulldozing Muslim communities to convert them to Jewish communities, no Muslim government in the region and ignore the ongoing ethnic cleansing and stay in power. They must oppose the ethnic cleansing, at least verbally if not in any military sense, or they have no chance of maintaining power in their own country. So Iran backs Hezbollah, who operate our of Lebanon and Syria. The Palestinian people of the West Bank believed (probably rightly) that Hezbollah was a lot less corrupt than the puppet government that Israel and the US recognizes as the "rightful" Palestinian authority, even though Hezbollah won a fair democratic election in the West Bank. Hezbollah is a complicated entity, but it's absolutely true that some of it's followers commit acts of terror against Israel, things like lobbing mortar rounds at schools. So Israel and the US refuse to recognize the democratically elected government on the ground in the West Bank on the grounds that we don't talk to terrorists. Which is odd, given that the ruling Likud party in Israel was founded by terrorists themselves (no long discussion here, read newspapers from the late 1940s and see who was kidnapping British peace keepers and bombing and assassinating Arab leaders, and you will see for yourself that it's the same people). In fairness to Likud, they "officially" gave up terrorism when they became legitimate. Although they still assassinate people who haven't done them any harm and are just trying to develop weapons to protect their own population, so the Muslims see them as being two faced since they say they won't negotiate with terrorists, but they absolutely committed terrorism in the past and arguably do so still, whenever they feel Israel is threatened they will certainly consider a terrorist type solution.
On top of that, Iran has serious problems internally. Once the revolution threw out the Shaw in the the late 70s, one of the 1st things the new government did was to educate everyone. This was unheard of in a Muslim country, especially educating every girl child. And those Iranian kids are now 30 somethings who have kept reading everything they can get their hands on. They are still Shiite Muslims, still opposed to the ethnic cleansing of Muslims that Israel does on a regular basis, but really really unhappy about the way their democracy was set up and wanting to get rid of the Theocratic component of their government. If we would leave them alone for ten years, they would be the most respectable and easy to deal with Muslim country in the world, but vested Israeli interests want to see conflict continue for a while, because once a real peace deal is reached in the region they will have a much harder time taking more land away from the Muslims who live there. So, Iran is terrified, and pursuing nuclear weapons because it seems the only way to keep it's people safe. It seems very likely they would be a lot less interested in obtaining nuclear weapons if they didn't have to worry about the nuclear weapons that Israel and Pakistan are holding over their heads right now.
Algustus,
The facts on the ground do not support at all what you are claiming about the Israelis commiting "genocide" against the Palestinians. The palestinian population in Gaza, the West Bank and inside Israel has been steadily increasing.
Also, just where do you think the Iranians got their very first assistance for their "peaceful nuclear program" from? It came from Pakistan!
Please try to get your facts right before posting all of that disinformation!
As usual, israel is trying to look like the victim..
Everybody in the world knows that israel wins many arguments despite the fact that they are wrong simply because of what jews suffered in WWII..
But enough is enough; You go and kill Iran's scientists, and expect the iranians just st back and take it?
I would be surprised if they do not do more. And I hope US will not back israel.
We have not yet recovered from the effects of IRAQI wars. We are stuck in Afghanistan in the middle of journey to no where!
Still these Israel and Saudis and their agents are pushing us into Iran wars and involvement in Syria.
How long do we have to carry the cross and do the dirty jobs for these warmongers?
IRAQ WARS.
1991 and 2003 Iraqi wars net results are
WINNERS:
1. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE and other rich ME sharks who manipulated oil prices too high.
2. Oil companies and their lobbyists.
3. Since 2003, future traders, rating agencies, Wall Street and oil companies and their lobbyists transferred, five trillion dollars from oil importing countries to oil exporting nations.
4. Islamic radicals and terrorists with their ME Sunni rich sharks (Saudi Arabia in particular) funding their mosques all over the world.
LOSERS:
1. General US and European nations public with high unemployment, cut in welfare measures, housing market collapse and more.
2. Poor soldiers who lost their lives and injured and their families.
3. High budget deficits and heavier borrowing. Many nations and people are on line to bankruptcy!
4. Iraq will plunge into bloody sectarian civil wars leading to the creation of Shiastan, Sunnistan and Kurdistan. Here the losses are of Iraqis.
A quick quiz: In the last 250 years, how many of its neighbors has Iran attacked? Answer: None of them.
Since its founding in 1948, how many of its neighbors has Israel attacked? Answer: All of them.
Now which country in the Middle East is a greater threat to its neighbors?
Israel, which clearly is the most belligerent, aggressive, militaristic nation on earth, has been fomenting hatred of Iran for decades, as previous commentators have pointed out.
While insisting that Iran is a "state sponsor of terrorism" for supporting Hezbollah in Lebanon (which was founded in 1982 by Lebanese citizens in direct response to Israel's invasion of Lebanon that spring), Israel places magnetic bombs on the cars of Iranian scientists and kills them, their drivers and innocent passersby; Israel carries out kidnappings, bombings and shootings worldwide; Israel used a chemical weapon for the purpose of assassination in Amman, the capital city of its neighbor, Jordan; Israel was the first to bring the technology and terror of the car bomb to Lebanon in the early 1970s; and in the notorious Lavon Affair of 1954, Israel even planted bombs at two US government facilities in Egypt. The purpose was to bomb the US facilities and then blame the Arabs for "terrorism," thereby sabotaging the Anglo-Suez agreement that was to be signed with the new charismatic leader of Egypt, Gamal Abdul Nassser. However, the scheme backfired when Egyptian intelligence agents captured the Israeli saboteurs and the bombs were never detonated. But it exposed the fact that even then, Israel was anything but America's "good close friend and trusted ally."
That was the same purpose when Israel attacked the unarmed US Navy communications ship, the USS Liberty, in June, 1967. The Liberty was cruising in the Mediterranean in international waters on a bright sunny afternoon, and was clearly marked with a large American flag. Israel attacked the ship in two waves, first by aircraft and then by torpedo boats. The objective was to sink the ship and kill the crew, and then blame the Egyptians. Israel hoped that the American people would by so outraged, they would join Israel in its attack on its Arab neighbors that spring.
Israel is now ranked as the most militarized, weaponized nation on earth, and the world's number six military superpower [Jane's Intelligence Review], thanks to guillable, obedient, hard-working, well-meaning, patriotic US taxpayers, who are largely uninformed about the Middle East, and who have bestowed upon Israel more than $123 billion, and counting. And what Israel doesn't get voluntarily from the American people, it routinely steals. Actually, Israel is now capable of reducing its Arab and Muslim neighbors, including Iran, either singly or collectively, to irradiated burned out cinders of rubble, sand, earth and dust in a matter of minutes.
Iran quite understandably wants deterrence from this deadly threat posed by Israel, and by Israel's hapless puppet, obsequious errand boy and reflexive weapons benefactor, the United States. Iran is now following the Japanese model of nuclear development, with the important addition of having inspectors present. Japan produced enriched uranium for peaceful purposes, but that enriched uranium also gives Japan a weapons potential. When was the last time (or first time) that Israel allowed nuclear inspectors into the tunnels, vaults and warrens of its secret underground nuclear, chemical and biological weapons facilities at Dimona, or for that matter, let them anywhere near the country?
The neocon/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Bush attacks, invasions and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq that still drag on, with some 200,000 Iraqi citizens killed [Wikileaks], with an unknown number of Afghans killed, and with some 35,000 US and coalition soldiers killed or maimed, should be a stark reminder for the American people -- Don't let US Middle East policy again be hijacked by hard-right Zionist neocons and their willing accomplices in pro-Israel think tanks, an administration, Congress and Big Media. Israel's interest in sacrificing your sons and daughters, bleeding and dying half a world away, to wage war on Israel's enemies for Israel, is not in your interest, and it is not in America's interest.
Light Mirror,
Read this quote from your post very carefully:
Israel is now ranked as the most militarized, weaponized nation on earth, and the world's number six military superpower
I don't know if you caught the contradiction there within that one sentence, but I certainly did!
I also caught the contradictions with reality present throughout the rest of your post as well!
It's no surprise that the U.S. and Israel have somewhat different perspectives. For Israel, Iran represents an existential threat. Israel has been here before, with results both good and bad as outlined at: www.jesustheheresy.com
i will tell you all if IRAN said they were going to exterminate all the americans you would say just what isreal is and if they attacked us like japan did trust me. you have seen the out come. immediate destruction of iran. and they have threatened usa. and a threat is a warning of what they are planning.if we let every little country tell us that they will attack and look the other way we would be in trouble.
