Tokyo fish monger fears more radiation leaks

Kazuya Yamamoto, a fish monger in Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market.

By Yuka Tachibana, NBC News Producer

TOKYO – At Tsukiji, Tokyo's main fish market, fishmonger Kazuya Yamamoto’s business has plummeted since the earthquake and tsunami struck northern Japan on March 11.

“Business has been slow. We used to have many customers from the north where the earthquake and tsunami struck, but obviously not now,” Yamamoto told NBC News.

Tsukiji is the largest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world. More than 400 different types of seafood are sold in the market daily – from cheap seaweed to massive 600 pound tunas.

The Tsukiji market was actually built after Tokyo's main fresh produce market was wiped out in the devastating Great Kanto earthquake of 1923. The 7.9 magnitude earthquake, Japan’s deadliest on record, left nearly 150,000 people dead or missing and wiped out much of central Tokyo.

But it’s not just the lack of clientele from the north that worries Yamamoto. The radiation leak from the crippled nuclear power plant has left consumers jittery about what they eat and with news of sea water contamination, although minute according to Japanese authorities, Yamamoto says people are shying away from buying fish.

“All of us are worried about the radiation – it seems the government hasn't been forthcoming with accurate information, and that makes us even more concerned,” said Yamamoto.

The Japanese government finally admitted Tuesday that the safeguards that had been in place to protect the nuclear plant against the earthquake and tsunami that severely damaged the facility and caused it to spew radiation were insufficient. The government vowed it would overhaul safety standards.

And with the news that highly radioactive water has been filling up in a concrete trench under reactor Number 2 at Fukushima plant, there is concern that if the situation is not contained, the radioactive water could find its way into the ocean.

Yamamoto says if the situation is not brought under control, it will have a devastating effect on business.

“If the situation is not remedied, I am sure that radiation will have an effect on the sea water, and if that happens, we're all going to be in serious trouble.”

Iodine-131 detected in Pacific Ocean water near the plant site surged to a new high of 3,355 times the legal limit, officials said -- compared to the previous top level of 1,850 times the legal maximum taken days ago. see http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific/view/1119645/1/.html

Richard Lahey, who was head of safety research for boiling-water reactors at General Electric when it installed the Fukushima units, and who was quoted by Britain's Guardian newspaper.

Available reactor and radiation data from the troubled unit two "suggest that the core has melted through the bottom of the pressure vessel" and onto the concrete floor, he was quoted as saying by the daily. "I hope I am wrong, but that is certainly what the evidence is pointing towards."

There are reports that reactor #3's containment vessel has a crack, based on the composition of the radioactive material in the water. This is the reactor that has MOX fuel rods, which contain elevated levels of plutonium..

Beyond the seawater/saltwater issue, water in and around the Nos. 1 and 2 reactors had "high radiation levels," Nishiyama said Friday -- though not as high as that of the No. 3 unit. Levels over 1,000 millisieverts a hour have been recorded. Anything over 100 millisieverts a year will result in cancer...

The information is being published. It is not being published by the Media outlets that are part owned by GE...

There is a simple solution for fish sellers: get a Geiger counter and SHOW to your customers that your product is not radioactive - everything else is just BS.

An interesting fact regarding the price of bluefin (giant) tuna. I fished tuna tournaments many years ago off the coast of Montauk, Rhode Island, Cape Cod, and Nove Scotia. The fish weighed in at anywhere between 200-800 pounds. We sold the fish to the Fulton Fish Market in New York City for 6 cents a pound. The same 700 pound fish today sells for approx. 3/4 of a million dollars in the Japanese fish market. Long liners as well as other commercial fishing ventures have destroyed the tuna fishing industry. The morons in our central government have destroyed the hook and line portion of the tuna fishing industry, which had permanantly killed off all tuna fishing by rod and reel, who took so few fish that were not worth counting, yet the commercial fishing industry thrives. I wonder how many congressmen own commercial fleets.

Meanwhile, a certain Billionaire in New York City has questions about OUR President Obama's birth.  Some agree with that Billionaire, but most who have done any research at all on the issue don't have any questions.

Similar to the fish at the fish market - do some research.  Find where the fish were caught; if necessary, learn how to operate a Geiger counter and take one with you to the fish market; and then choose the fish that are 'clean' of radiation.

You go on 'gut feelings'?  'Gut feelings' are notoriously fickle, and in most likelihood, it is your last meal 'settling in'.

Is anyone else scared about this? The prophecy in the 8th chapter of Revelations says that (in the end time) a third of the waters would be turned bitter. If all that radiation gets into the ocean, this could be fatal for the world.

You're talking about an event that will take place during the Great Tribulation which hasn't started yet. The Rapture of the Church has to take place first.

I don't know if our generation is THE generation, I am simply saying?
But, if I were to go just a little deeper, I would say this...
The third millennium started in 2000, in revaluations we are told the Antichrist comes at the end of a millennium. we also know that the number 3 is all over Christ IE:
he was killed at age 33
he resurrected on the 3rd day
he was crucified with 3 nails
3 men were crucified that day
according to Gospel of John: Jesus preached for three years
Jesus said “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up” 3 days
He was baptized at the age of 30
Gospel of John "Jesus visits Jerusalem only 3 times."
After 3 days they (his parents) found him in the temple teaching at age 12
father son and holy ghost 3
we are the third planet from the sun (GOD)
The moon reflects the sun, to keep us out of darkness (christ)
mother, father, child 3 (the circle of life)
first name, middle name, last name... 3
So one might just look a little deeper, into the third millennium!
              just saying?

give it a rest already. this earth and other planets have a life just as we do, we ALL DIE. empires always fall history shows that. If we die from eating sushi or an earth quake, a car crash, choking on a glass of water or heart failure, are you going to actually refer to a book that has been re written many times over( that has far been the death of more people combined than what Hitler did to the Jews and this earthquake in Japan- both times_) and blame destruction on what man has put in the bible? wake up! there is a much bigger picture than this. Eat the fish from the radioactive water, try reading 1984, freak out and propagate more fear based on that book and die from uranium poisoning. Or chill out, live what life you do have without all that fear, have a nice cup of tea, listen to the wind, really taste your food, live right now and know that you have this moment. I hope the best for you whoever you are.

Reading comments like these make me glad I live in Japan, where there are few Christians and even what relatively few Christians there are seem to know how utterly irrelevant the Bible is to current events or, indeed, any phenomenon that can be studied or described with verifiable, replicable procedures. Such comments also reassures me that I am correct in planning to have children in a country where I can be pretty sure they will not be taught in school by Christians.

Oh my God there are some religious nut balls out there no pun intended. If you want to continue to listen to a book that was written by MAN back when the world was flat is one thing but PLEASE dont bring it to your comment section. I cant believe you would even think that it is even close to accurate OK I can says this because I am free to do so and please dont ride my shorts because I feel differently than you do. If you look closely and you ride airplanes then your going to Hell because only god and birds can fly yeah right and the world was flat and by the way the FLOOD just let me ask how can they say that the entire world was flooded when they had no communications with the entire world sure the flood may have happened there but it did not effect the entire world just like the tsunami that just hit Japan it can have devastating effects on the place it hits and leave others completely alone just use your common sense in the matter.

Tokyo Electric makes that gulf oil spill look not so bad, yes?

There are many points of comparison. Both are avoidable disasters for the environment (don't drill for oil and don't build nuclear reactors - probs avoided.) Both situations are exaggerations of natural processes (oil seeps from the seabed naturally and radiation emits from space and from the earth - in fact, that is why the core of our planet is hot, allowing the continental plates to slide around and cause earthquakes and tsunamis.) Both accidents were triggered by man's imperfect attempts to utilize the natural energy processes, while underestimating the possible glitches. Both involve confusing, contradictory, and skimpy information for the public, increasing the stress and panic (to be fair, much of this is because no one knows the facts.) Both will result in massive injuries for a population that had no control or input in the process. Their only benefit was that they were allowed to purchase the energy produced (and maybe share a tiny bit of the proceeds by purchasing stock in the companies, until the wreck.)

I protested nuclear energy from day one, even before the first reactor was built. My objection was and still is based on the fact that they were putting the cart before the horse in creating a waste that is radioactive for tens of thousands of years and we have yet to figure out a long-term place to put this stuff. Meanwhile it keeps piling up in unsafe storage places all over the world.

Something very few people know is that coal burning plants produce gobs of radioactive waste AND a boatload of other carcinogenic wastes they release into the environment.

Here is an article in Scientific American, a pretty hard science source that "Coal Ash is more Radioactive than Nuclear Waste.

                        http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=coal-ash-is-more-radioactive-than-nuclear-waste

If you add up carcinogenic impact on the environment, nuclear energy is cleaner than fossil fuel, even with the occasional disaster. Kinda scary, we are screwed either way, huh?

They sold the public on nuclear saying it was "cheap" and "clean" energy. Ask Japan if nuclear energy is cheap and clean. This mess they are struggling to contain is far from cheap and really far from clean.

Things are sure falling apart. Deepwater soils American shores and is buried in the news, Japans nuclear plant has been buried in the news it seems for years as deficient and vunerable to disaster and we now will all pay the price for it and the Pope runs the largest pedophile ring in the world and those catholic dioceses have been using all that donated money to assist all the people who's lives were wrecked.

And of then we have Obammies who can't even mention the nuclear crises in his justification to America speech and tries to keep us focused only on libya and the coming onslaught of mulims who want to kill all of us infidels.

The overreaction of the general population outside of Japan to this disaster seems so very typical. The nuclear disaster has killed several people, mainly due to physical plant failures and not due to radioactivity -- but the reaction is to cry foul on nuclear power. Meanwhile, thousands of people die in mining accidents every year, and nobody calls for a shutdown of all mining.

Energy production, like much of human activity, is about balancing the benefit with the risk. In the case of nuclear power, so far the risk has been managed rather well and the costs of accidents have been small on a global scale. If we can get past irrational fears that are founded in a fundamental misunderstanding of basic science, we should realize that this disaster is a prime example of just how wonderfully _safe— nuclear power can be.

With all the money sushi restaurants make for serving rice and fish it is about time America does away with this over priced delicacy.

No it won't mean the end of sushi, sushi chefs or sushi restaurants around the world but instead just a relocation of the worlds largest seafood market now located in Japan will just pull up stakes and reappear somewhere off the coast of New Zealand or any other "fresh port" that doesn't have a bad reputation for radiation tainted fish like Japan will soon have...

OMG! OMG! We're all gonna die! Please. The situation in Japan at the Fukushima Daiichi plant is extremely serious, but the constant fear mongering in the press isn't doing anyone much good. The sea water measurements of radiation near the plant have dropped considerably over the past week, and if further contamination can be stopped -- a big if at this point -- we can expect those levels to drop further. Levels of contamination in the fish that have been sampled so far have been very low, in fact below the level of detection in most cases. Continued vigilence is necessary, of course, but a number of different independent agencies are monitoring the situation.

In reality, even for those who don't pay much attention to evidence based science, mercury and other industrial contaminants from fossil fuels, are likely to continue to be the biggest source of health risks from fish.

No sympathy from me and millions of others for Japan's seafood fetish being destroyed.. Japan has been raping the oceans and greedily reducing bluefin tuna populations to nothing.. also the repulsive "shark fin" soup trade reduced sharks to less than 10% of their populations, but now the center of Japan's shark fin trade has been wiped out by the tsunami.  killing dolphins and whale poaching were just the most obvious transgressions.

Japan does not trade in sharks. China and the united states do.

Most bluefin tuna come from america's east coast. Japan just buys them from american fishermen.

Japan does indeed trade in sharks. However, most of the shark I buy (and that little I still have in my freezer) comes from/came from Fukushima. Kamaboko also is often made of shark.

World War 11. The Japanese killed my cousin in front of her father my Uncle. Point Blank. Kura Kura Kura. These are the words the Japanese said to us filipinos. But, all is forgiven. History. I wish all of us will get along well. No pride, no ego. PEACE.

Oh, by the way. Please leave the whales alone. If you want to fish. Go fishing the natural way. Don't be too obsessed with too much sushi.
