The White House has just issued this statement from President Barack Obama:
The Egyptian people have been told that there was a transition of authority, but it is not yet clear that this transition is immediate, meaningful or sufficient. Too many Egyptians remain unconvinced that the government is serious about a genuine transition to democracy, and it is the responsibility of the government to speak clearly to the Egyptian people and the world. The Egyptian government must put forward a credible, concrete and unequivocal path toward genuine democracy, and they have not yet seized that opportunity.
As we have said from the beginning of this unrest, the future of Egypt will be determined by the Egyptian people. But the United States has also been clear that we stand for a set of core principles. We believe that the universal rights of the Egyptian people must be respected, and their aspirations must be met. We believe that this transition must immediately demonstrate irreversible political change, and a negotiated path to democracy. To that end, we believe that the emergency law should be lifted. We believe that meaningful negotiations with the broad opposition and Egyptian civil society should address the key questions confronting Egypt's future: protecting the fundamental rights of all citizens; revising the Constitution and other laws to demonstrate irreversible change; and jointly developing a clear roadmap to elections that are free and fair.
We therefore urge the Egyptian government to move swiftly to explain the changes that have been made, and to spell out in clear and unambiguous language the step by step process that will lead to democracy and the representative government that the Egyptian people seek. Going forward, it will be essential that the universal rights of the Egyptian people be respected. There must be restraint by all parties. Violence must be forsaken. It is imperative that the government not respond to the aspirations of their people with repression or brutality. The voices of the Egyptian people must be heard.
The Egyptian people have made it clear that there is no going back to the way things were: Egypt has changed, and its future is in the hands of the people. Those who have exercised their right to peaceful assembly represent the greatness of the Egyptian people, and are broadly representative of Egyptian society. We have seen young and old, rich and poor, Muslim and Christian join together, and earn the respect of the world through their non-violent calls for change. In that effort, young people have been at the forefront, and a new generation has emerged. They have made it clear that Egypt must reflect their hopes, fulfill their highest aspirations, and tap their boundless potential. In these difficult times, I know that the Egyptian people will persevere, and they must know that they will continue to have a friend in the United States of America.

Just shut up BO, alias BO Hussein Osama! You can not figure a way to disguise your pro Muslim stand into an Egyptian issue. Yes we have serious interests in Egypt, but you were warned late in 2010 about political unrest in Egypt and what did you do? NOTHING! You are a null in foreign relations, apologizing for America every chance you get. Your lack of experience is showing again and your comments only make the Egyptian situation worse. Until you really have something to say, please do everybody a favor and keep your comments to yourself. You continue to prove that you are the single worst mistake in all of United States history. SHUT UP and we will take care of you in 2012. Until then or the Supreme Court demands to see your bogus birth certificate and throws you out, we are in damage control mode.
Charles-2418560 is consumed with irrational, racists hate speech.
Charles go swill your tea, it is getting very bitter!
Charles -- you are shameful, disrepectfuly, and a hate-filled bigot. Try educating yourself a bit.
Charles why do you say such things do you think before you speak untill you get your self into the white house or any politic status please kind sir be quiet, you sound like a ignorant person.
Charles' comment disrespecting the duly elected leader of our country represents the deluded perspective held of our first African American President faces with every move he tries to make widely expressed by white racist and fearful citizens. Mubarak is equally deluded if he won't listen to our wise Presidents cautionary words.
My thoughts exactly Don.
.. Don
You are correct about Charles. I do not believe he honors the American form of voting.
"We" are insane ie. scary!
Hey BO Hussein Osama, we remain unconvinced that you are an American, hold America's interest at heart and are qualified to be President. So why do you stir up unrest in Egypt? You simply have no experience as an executive of anything! This is and has been America's problem, but fool us once, shame on you; fool us twice, shame on us. Just wait until 2012 if you make it that far to see if your message rings with voters or rings hollow. All you have done after the 2010 spanking in the polls is to get new vocabulary. Now you are "investing" in light rail instead of throwing more money to the labor unions, via construction, operations and inefficiencies built into an labor union preferred contract letting and operations scenarios. They have broken the American auto industry and you want them to break the world.
Wow, Glenn Beck sure pitched a tent in your head. Get well.
Could you clarify this comment, please?
Charles, I think you need to learn not to pull the tabs on your Depends too tight. You are clearly very disturbed. Now try getting yourself off the couch, walk upstairs from Mom's basement, go outside, and try interacting with the human race. You might actually learn something from someone other than the right-wing nuts you are parroting.
We are walking a fine line and so far I think President Obama is balancing well between the people of Egypt 's wish for a quick change and the need for an orderly process. I would say Mubarak sounds like he is not genuine in changing the status quo.
I also don't know what to make of the earlier blogger venting his hated of our President in such a manner. How would this person do things differently? I am sorry he did not get his White Anglo Saxon president. But who better to speak to the Arab people? I don't believe you have a claim on American thinking any more than the next person does. We are all Americans.
Charles, You sound like that Republican focus group in Iowa that was on the news the other night. They did not think President OBama was a Christian or was born here or was basically an American. Sorry to disappoint you , but America is changing and you a going to be left behind in your hatred state. Our country is becoming more multicultural all the time so get over it. All this stuff about President Obama is just being spewed by a few hate mongers to those without enough free thinking to check the facts and read.
This labor union thing is really interesting. I wonder what you would have said if you had lived in the early part of the last century when the worker was just chattel, the working conditions were horrid, and our factories were sweatshops giving the workers nothing. Well, the unions did make many changes in the work environment for the better Charles if you could read or would read an American history book. Maybe now with the government protecting all of us they may not be as useful, but you owe a lot to them like it or not.
The despotic current leader of EGYPT cannot hide behind behind his 30 years of tyrannical rule, as the United States cannot deny their cooperation, to insure stability and their interests in same. So be it, I know of no one that does not look out for their self interests, Including all you bloggers. But I do strongly believe that the US proceeds on grounds that are as humane and rational as any country in the world. Please give me the names of any country near 300 plus million people that gives more to the myriad of countries much smaller and much more needy. Peace brothers and pleade love your neighbor. RADtheDAD
Hey Charles, you want some Tea with that whine?? You are one scary mob mentality bigot!
Obama wants the Muslim Brotherhood to walk in, No?
Then why tell him to step down, if he is not willing to walk in there with some muscle, (military) and oversee the elections process, then don't say anything.
The Muslim Brotherhood assassinated Anwar Sadat, they will do the same to Mubarak, this is probably why he wants to go to another country for 'health' reasons.
Obama should not have said anything, if this is the reverberation he wants in the world, then why didn't he say anything to the Iran Regime, when they had an uprising.
Let's just hope, this Terrorist organization, the Muslim Brotherhood, does not get their way, it will Iran 1979 all over again.
As the Egyptian people, demonstrating or in their homes wondering what the next days will bring their country, I sincerely hope we Americans are able to keep focused on their struggle and find the integrity to focus on them instead of being diverted by rabble rousing at home and by our own divisions and political preferences. It's about the Egyptians, not about us! Our roll might be to pray for them--for gifts of wisdom, for renouncing violence, and for continuing fortitude.
Charles pleease sir sit down some where. What you are saying makes no sience you sound igonorent.Untill you become president or be in any politicale positions you should be quiet please
Speak up about the President's short comings and you're a "racsist" Gimme a break! What about 1st Ammendment rights. You loony liberals are supposed to be caring and compassionate but, let anyone say something you don't like and the real you shows. Worst defaming and language you can hear. Caring and compassionate, HA!!! Come some time in the spring of 2013, your "Messiah" will be running a 3 card Monte game somewhere in "The Loop"
Aaaaand how is "will be running a 3 card Monte game some where in The Loop." NOT racist...or at the very least derogatory? I find it fascinating that a person can deny being a racist, and then refute it in the span of just a few words. It's no different from the Bush era, when one could be branded as a traitor for daring to criticize the President. Liberals do not have the market cornered on inflammatory rhetoric, my friend.
there ya go again, how do you get racism out of 3 card monte. It's a street game, it's played all over the world, by people of all races. It goes back 500 years - hey, the image of it in Wikipedia shows it being played in Israel, do you mean that the reference is anti-semitic? That's a tough one to sell - hating Obama because he's jewish? As to derogatory, yep, I'd have to say any suggestion to anyone (in power) that they would find them selves running a street game, would have to be taken as a somewhat derogatory comment.
The point, however was racial comments. There haven't been any in this comment section, except for those accusing people of being racists - those are the racist comments. It's that same presumption - if you didn't vote for Obama, you must be a racist... And if Hillary Clinton had one the primary, I guess every one who didn't vote for her, is a sexist?
Charles makes little sense, but when the attacks equally make little sense (the racist aspect)
Which only raises this question. Let's consider the democratic party - that would mean that everyone who voted for Clinton (primaries) was a racist, everyone who voted for Obama was a sexist, and I think we can all agree, anyone who would have voted for Edwards - is just a complete idiot.
I mention that last remark, as a demonstration of a derogatory remark. That was derogatory towards Edwards, but not to the idiots. Some people are just idiots, and that, btw, does not make me "anti-special needs" or anti - anything at else. Some folks - on both sides of the isle, just spew nonsense. - from the middle. yesterday everyone beat on charles, but a few defended him for what he was accused of saying that he never did. Again, all you who voted for Clinton in the Primary? Are you racists? If you aren't then how come most of the folks who didn't vote for him in the election are accused of being racists? Shouldn't you be defending them?
Amazing how Charles managed to distract you all from the real topic of Mubarek & Egypt. Best to just ignore off-topic ranting.
And to Jerryb12, The Muslim Brotherhood is NOT a terrorist organization. Too many people see the word "Muslim" and think it means Terrorist. The Brotherhood is composed of practicing Muslims ranging from liberal to conservative. They disagree internally about a range of topics. And they have done a world of good in Eqypt - which sounds amazingly similar to our own Republican and Democratic Parties in the U.S. They deserve to be heard, and in the elections they may not even be an issue since currently, they only have polical support from less than 10% of the population. Meanwhile, the Eqyptian government has been doing very little except finding ways to not change with the rest of the world. The way Egyptians come through this will be all of their own doing. Perhaps the rest of us will learn something about democracy by watching and listening.
Please Mr. Obama let us invest in education for our people,so that we don't have to endure the embarrasement of the display of ignorance, disrespect, bigotry, narrowmindedness, and savage tribalism displayed by Charles, shame on you Charles, shame on you!
Greetings all,
Regarding Charles - ok, he's way over the top, but what is interesting, is so many responses calling him a bigot. There's a lot of things the guy says, but NONE of it is racial. He does rant about religion, Obama's birth location, and a lot about unions. Why do so many liberals and progressives assume that anyone who disagrees with Obama must inherently be a bigot? That makes about as much sense, as saying everyone who's pro choice is a baby killer, and everyone who's pro gun, is a murderer. Same nonsense. Stay focused.
Personally, I don't see the whole Egypt unrest as coming to a happy conclusion. I suspect at the end of the day, we'll have a new democracy, based on Sharia law, in which case a lot of Egyptians will be wishing for the good old days. I do hope for a better outcome than that, however, our commenting isn't going to have much effect on anything.
Exactly. Do you really think he'd believe Obama was 'foreign' if he was white? The Birther movement is all about race, just like the whole Obama-is-a-Muslim thing. No way a white president would provoke such conspiracy theories.
Regarding Egypt, the best course of action for the US is to let the Egyptians decide what type government is best for them, then recognize the new government. Democracy isn't the best thing for all people, it requires a very literate electorate to stand any chance of success. I would almost bet that Egypt doesn't have a high literacy rate to sustain a true democratic form of government. However, I will give them credit for being able to get rid of their trash in short order, so maybe they should be helping us with our government.
Hey BOY (aka Charley Boy), your bigotry and hatred is standing out like a sore thumb. We just got rid of the worst president in our history.
About President Obama's Certificate of Live Birth, that is a form of the birth certificate that is used. So what if it doesn't look just like yours does-- mine doesn't look like my husband's birth certificate. It doesn't mean anything other than we weren't born in the same state.
