Update 6:18 p.m. ET: McCain has now issued a full statement:
"The rapidly deteriorating situation in Egypt leads me to the conclusion that President Mubarak needs to step down and relinquish power. It is clear that the only institution in Egypt that can restore order is the army, but I fear that for it to do so on behalf of a government led by or involving President Mubarak would only escalate the violence and compromise the army's legitimacy. I urge President Mubarak to transfer power to a caretaker administration that includes members of Egypt's military, government, civil society, and pro-democracy opposition, which can lead the country to free, fair, and internationally credible elections this year as part of a real transition to democracy.
All Americans should be appreciative of President Mubarak's long record of cooperation with our government, which has helped to fight terrorism and promote peace and security in the Middle East and North Africa. I remain concerned about the role of the Muslim Brotherhood and other organizations in Egypt that espouse an extremist ideology. But Egypt must have a democratic future. It is the will of the Egyptian people. It is in the interest of the United States. And the greatest contribution that President Mubarak can make to the cause of democracy in his country is to remove himself from power.
_____
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., just tweeted that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak should go now:
McCain — or his office — tweeted the message shortly after the senator met with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office.

So the Egyptian leader is going to listen to a tweet from a Senator who failed miserably in his political aspirations largely due to the fact that he was so feeble-minded as to pick Sarah Palin as a running mate?
Funny stuff!
would the americans accept it when other nation leaders ask their president to step down? Would they like other nation leaders influence and manipulate the politics of their nation? For 30 years USA used Egypt president to be the puppet to help in the peace and stability in the middle east. They used money and other means to help Mubarak to stay in power for 30years. They did not care about his style of leadership whether it was democratic or dictatorship. As he serve the USA interests. They never cared about how he led the people of Egypt and what are the grievances of the people. If they cared this situation would not have arrived. USA often say they promote democracy and care about the voice of the people. But yet at the same time they support tyrants and dictators to stay in power. Its quite clear USA with all its speeches that it cared for the world is not true it is only interested to establish themselves as the only world super power and the only economic power of the world. Is that democratic? When China or Russia or any nation rise in power and influence they will do everthing and anything to bring to them down. Thats includes false allegations and issues to get other nations to come against them. Is this democracy? If you watch carefully USA can print dollars without equalling to the value of gold. By this way and other deceptive ways they have kept themselves as the world's most powerful economic power
What it is exactly you are saying? Tell me something I did not knwow. We all know American government loves dictators as they serve their interest. All I care about is now. Obama needs to tell the bum Mubarak to leave now not 6 months. I came from a country that's used to be ruled by a dictator. I know how the egyptians feel. Long live Egypt! Down with Mubarak!
McCain is to Senile to understand how irrelevant he is.
And then what John? Just let it play out? Wow! Does anyone think there are opinions from the other 19 million in Cairo that are not in line with the 100,000 demonstrators. We should support order and the rule of law as it exist in Egypt. We should support controlled change. Who has proof that the majority of Egyptians want an immediate regime change. I guess if we played by the new rules there would have been a new government installed here after the LA riots a few decades ago.
Is sham election and torture your own people are called law and order. If you have 19000000 people supporting Mubarak, where the heck are they? Stop fooling yourself Mubarak is a dictator whose pockets are full with my tax money. No more money for Muba. Leave now before it's too late for your health.
When will the main street media stop posting what are bank and corporate paid lying ass poltitians spew?
On Subday Jan30 the Times of London called on the US to side with the Demonstraters and for Mubarak to step down .They also wrote that Obama has been too reticent about democracy campaigners.
Now the peaceful demonstrations have turned Bloody.Has Obama called for Mubarak to get on a plane yet?
The anti america signs have started to appear and Eqypt may be gone, thanks to INDECISION in the WH.
Mubarak does need to step down. But then what? Thier is no second in command. Theirs no force to deal with to lead the nation forward. That needs to be handled first before he steps down. But it has to be made soon (not 6 months down the road). Obama.. the famous speech maker... hasnt really stated anything yet on this. o yea he asked that the government didnt fire on its own people, but nothing else. so in the mean time .. we watch. They like many other nations around the world... hate interference from the United States , unless they need food or money... so we need to stay outta it. Common sence tells us that Mubarak needs to go.
