Egypt roundup: Muslim brotherhood rejects new government

Update 11:03 a.m. ET: Leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood tell NBC News in a call to its Cairo bureau that it "rejects the new government and calls on Egyptian people to continue with demonstrations and to spread the demonstrations throughout the country until the regime has fallen. We call on people to have patience until they succeed."

Catching you up on the protests in Egypt after a momentous weekend:

• The seventh day of protests opened today with the wholesale replacement of President Hosni Mubarak's Cabinet as thousands of protesters poured into Tahrir Square chanting, "Get out ... we want you out," and singing the national anthem. Msnbc.com rounds up developments.

• Israelis are closely watching the situation in one of their few allies in the region, NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports from Tel Aviv:

NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports from Tel Aviv, where Israelis are tuned in to the political uprising in their neighboring country.

• A flight carrying 42 dependents of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo has just touched down in Larnaca, Cyprus, this morning, NBC's Tom Aspell  reports from the Cypriot capital. Another charter flight with 150 or more evacuees is expected, but there is no word yet on when it will arrive.

Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Janice Jacobs tells MSNBC there are seven charter flights scheduled for today heading to Cyprus, Greece and Turkey. If all the scheduled flights go out, the United States have transported more than 900 Americans out of Egypt and expects to remove 1,000 more tomorrow.

NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports that the U.S. military has no direct role in the airlift but is watching the situation closely and planning for contingencies.

• State newspapers have published a sharply worded letter from Mubarak ordering the new prime minister, former Air Force Gen. Ahmed Shafiq, him to move swiftly to introduce political, legislative and constitutional reforms.

• Preparations are continuing for a massive demonstration of more than 1 million people tomorrow in Cairo. The New York Times has details

• The Washington Post reports that uniformed police are back on the streets after not having been in evidence over the weekend. The army has not interfered with the protests and has not enforced the curfews. That could change, however, with police back in the picture," it says.

• Al-Jazeera, which has been the leading conduit of news from the country, reports that six of its journalists were arrested and held for about 90 minutes. "The move comes a day after Al Jazeera was told to shut down its operations in the country and saw its signal to some parts of the Middle East cut," it says.

• China is also censoring reports to its huge population. "A search for 'Egypt' on the Twitter-like service Sina brings up a message saying, 'According to relevant laws, regulations and policies, the search results are not shown,'" The Christian Science Monitor reports.

i don't know about their ties to aq david but they are a world wide hard line islamist organization who's goal is to enforce sharia law on the world and to wipe israel off the face of the earth…but i am sure the progressives will  try to make them look like misunderstood moderate muslim saints who are victims of the ignorant infidel

They are fundimentalist looking to benefit from the misfortunes of another group of people with little choice. Whats new. It is the only way they ever come to power. They are opportunists.

hmmm...hasn't the media been screaming the last few days that this "revolution" had nothing to do with religion or the muslim brotherhood, that it was the common man on the streets looking for rights and freedom and the muslim brotherhood was in no way involved?

          #2.2 - Mon Jan 31, 2011 1:43 PM EST

Maybe Hillary should go and speak to the "Brotherhood" to assure a smooth transition of power. She kept spewing the nonsense about how all the US is concerned with is the well being of the Egyptian people. She refused to comment on weather or not the Dictator should leave .

This uprising has nothing to do with Democracy in action.. It is nothing more then a power grab by the Muslim Brotherhood.

I find it funny, how a couple years ago when Iran actually had a Democratic Uprising, our Gvmnt did nothing, but now when we have a radical Islamic group trying to grab power ( Much like Iran soo many years ago) our Gvmnt calls for the local Gvmnt to be disbanded.

When will it sink in to the US Govt and Americans that desperate people will embrace desperate measures? We cannot prop up dictatorships as sham democracies without provoking an eventual backlash by the masses. And when that occurs we can't expect them to hold us in high esteem or deep affection.

Most extreme marxist or religious fundamentalist have been aided and abetted to come to power by a cynical or inept US foreign policy, to a lesser or greater extent. People who have a good roof over their head, safety and security for their family, access to health care, education and jobs are lousy recruits for any extreme political or fundamentalist religious movement.

Through our misguided foreign policy (and failure to uphold the values and freedoms we claim to hold dear) we create opportunities like the current one for the Muslim Brotherhood to hijack the process occuring in Egypt, much akin to what US behavior did to usher in the extremists in Iran.

There is a lot of US and Western culpability for what is taking place right now in Egypt and if developments go seriously "south" and a future regime emerges that is neither democratic nor friendly to the West, that culpability remains.

I still dont understand why the U.S. insists on calling Mubarik president. He assumed power in 1981 and has held power with a strong hand ever since. There has`nt been a democratic election in Egypt in atleast three decades.

Oooooooo, the scary Muslim Brotherhood! Be very afraid!

What is wrong with you clowns? There has been some sort of despicable autocrat in every country we supported over the years. Even Iran. And Iraq. It's high time we stopped supporting dictators. Religious autocracies also collapse after the passion is gone - it's all in the sweep of history.

This article is pure propaganda in my opinion.  This uprising has little to do with the very small "Muslim Brotherhood" faction in Egypt.

To Write and Article that implies that  Only "The Muslim Brotherhood" rejects Mubarak's attempt to hold on to power is a Total Fallacy.

None of the protesters are accepting Mubarak's new cabinet nor his appointment of the head of the notorious Egyptian Security Agency as Vice President.

I am frankly shocked the MSN would allow such a one sided and fallacious story to be released.  The coverage on Al Jazeera live is much more balanced.  Interviews on the street tell a story of people from all walks of life, Christian and Muslim having  had enough of 30 years of autocratic, repressive and corrupt government and the defacto dictatorship of Mubarak and the police state he runs.

Well, maybe the Egyptians may not be so eager to trade one dictatorship for a worse one, and remain more moderate. Otherwise, what did they gain? After all, this is only free advise from the brotherhood, so far, and it's what Egypt was going to do anyway.. Well, the pres of Egypt (and the US for that matter) had 30yrs to prove that democracy was a good idea, hopefully Egypt will see the core of democracy for what it is MEANT to be, and decide that it's the best option. They did seem to be headed in that direction.

Hello America, """"""""" More than 100 people have died during protests aimed at ending Mubarak's 30-year-old rule, with the outcome appearing to depend greatly on whatever steps are to be taken by the military. Protesters, who blame the Mubarak regime for widespread poverty, inflation and official indifference and brutality, called for a general strike on Monday. They are aiming to hold a 1 million-person march in the capital Tuesday to demand the resignation of Egypt's 82-year-old ruler, said Mahmoud El-Said, one of the organizers."""""""""""""" now let me make just a few observations, First do you know who paid for the Tanks and the Jets flying over Cairo? take a guess, thats right everytime Hillary Clinton vists the Middle-east, You the American Citizens paid out Billions to these foreign trouble spots, currently Egypt recieves $1.5 Billion U.S. Dollars every year, now you tell me why the American people are paying any, Any foreign Aide to an Oil Rich Opec nation? The American People bought the tanks and planes and Army of Mubarak, and Just like Iran in years gone past, a radical Muslim extreamist regime wants to take over the afford mention Army, once again we see the fruits of Meddling in other countries politics, and once again The American Public is left holding the Bag, so I say NO MORE FOREIGN AIDE of my Tax DOllars, its easy to see that we cann't force The American Form of Democracy upon anyone, and we should cease and desist to do such. and since the Muslim Brotherhood and Clerics have such a great hold over these Arab minds, all you get when you try to create a Democratic goverment is a radical fasciist religous regime, the same type of regime is trying to get established on ground zero, and with the Help of Bill and Hillary Clinton, and yes its all a part of the Lasting Kennedy Legacy for America, you remember when Ted Kennedy was busy changing all your Immigration Laws to Allow more Muslims from the Middle-east to enter your country, yeah you remember, this whole conspiracy against the American Democracy was spawned, in a Compund just off of Uncle Roberts Road, in Hyannus Port, Massachusetts, and now that same Kennedy Clan is beginning to raise its Ugly head again testing the Political waters as they have done for the Last Fifty Years, sincerely Fezzy Bear

During the past two years Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has:

Requested that Israel sign the NPT treaty, Israel refused.

Requested that Israel allow IAEI inspectors into Israel, Israel refused.

Requested that Israel sign the No Nuclear Weapons in the Middle East treaty, Israel refused.

Murbarak Refused the Israeli demand that Israels Iron Umbrella anti-missile system be parked inside Egypt.

Murbarak Repeatedly refused to support any attack by Israel on Iran.

Murbarak Refused American and Israeli demands to have Israeli offensive military weapons parked inside Egypt.

And now there is a Israeli push to remove Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak replace him the the Zionist boot licker Omar Suleiman and blame President Obama for not supporting Mubarak!.

There is no doubt that the Zionist running Israels government want Mubarak out and replaced by another Zionist boot licker. I hope the Muslim Brotherhood gain control of Egypt's next government and further isolates the tiny Apartheid state of Israel.

Israel is up to their noses in Egypt's business with their evil Zionist agenda fully running during Egypt's crisis.

During Mubarak's frantic calls to the Zionists running Israels government in exchange/cooperation for providing Mubarak a luxury first rate exile in Tel Aviv on the backs of the American taxpayers, Mubarak has installed Omar the Destroyer as his Vice President. Yep, Omar Suleiman and the goose stepping Zionists in Israel go far back together. Omar as the former head of Egypt's intelligence agencys is also widely alleged to have tortured THOUSANDS of Egyptians.

It figures that after discussions with the Zionists in Israel, Mubarak would install the worst human right offender in all of Egypt as Mubarak's successor!

The Egyptian people have no choice now, if their fail to sweep Mubarak and his torture stooge out of office, thousands of them will be rounded up and tortured in the Egyptian prisons courtesy of Omar the Destroy. This depravity is most certainly dreamed up by the Zionist military think tanks who absolutely do not have the Egyptian people's future in mind whatsoever.

The Zionist Propaganda Rag, The Jerusalem Post today began spewing it's demonization of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, of course it fails to mention the Muslim Brotherhood condemns terrorism, condemned the 9/11 attacks, stands for and urges non-violent changes and the pro-Zionists routinely paint them as radical Muslims, go figure!

Hand-held VHF-UHF FM transceivers are routinely used across the entire Middle East nations including Egypt. They are however often only line of sight unless a repeater tower is connected to expand coverage. Here in America, such repeater towers travel up and down the West and East Coast with many interior metro-cities with outlining repeater towers giving them expanded coverage also. One or more new Chinese manufacturers produce these with encryption modes allowing for a private and secure communication alternative that various US Military and nations security agency's would not be able to easily listen and record whatever was said or transmitted.

Here in America, hikers, hunters and RV travelers often fully use FRS, GMRS (Family Radio Service, General Mobile Radio Service) which operate in the UHF (Ultra-High Frequency) 3/4 meter 461mhz frequency which again is line of sight (5-20 miles) and generally does not connect thru repeater towers but uses a simple tone encryption routine for quick communications that would be ideal for the Egyptian protesters.

It would be a nice touch to coordinate donations of FRS, GMRS hand held transceivers to the Egyptian protest leaders to help coordinate their activities and report dangerous actions by the Egyptian police, military and secret intelligence agency's.

The need for two-way communication between protest leaders inside Egypt would be a vital way of Americans here at home in helping them and provide the Egyptian protesters a modicum of safety and security in the process. FRS, GMRS transceivers are relatively inexpensive and easily available thru the local Wal-Mart and many outdoor and hunting outlets across America.
