ITTAN WALLI, Pakistan – In early November, in the dusty city of Sheikhupura in Pakistan’s heartland, Asia Bibi, an illiterate Christian woman and mother of five, was sentenced to death by hanging under the country’s blasphemy laws.
Her crime? She allegedly insulted the Prophet Muhammad.
Almost immediately, the death sentence unleashed international condemnation, and put pressure on Pakistan’s government to overturn the verdict and amend the country’s blasphemy laws – a holdover from a 19th century penal code designed to protect minority religious sects during British colonial times.
The law was radicalized during the 1980’s under the military dictatorship of General Zia ul Haq. He imposed life sentences, even death, for blasphemy to appease the mullahs and legitimize his grip on power.
Pope Benedict XVI appealed for clemency but hard-line Islamic groups have threatened civil war if the government pardons Bibi or attempts to amend the law.
Bibi’s husband, 48-year-old Ashiq Masih, is desperate, convinced radical Islamic groups are aiming to kill the family. He has gone into hiding, along with his children, sheltered inside a Christian colony in an outlying district of Sheikhupura. Masih insists his wife was framed, a victim of old score-settling in their village of Ittan Walli, where his family was just one of two Christian families.
“She was picking berries with other women, when she was sent to get water,” her husband said. “One of the women refused to drink the water after my wife dipped her cup into the bucket. This woman said it was contaminated because it was touched by a Christian.” According to Masih, all the women then started taunting his wife, and shouting insults against her mother and their children. Bibi just repeated the same insults back at them. “The name of the holy prophet never came up.”
At the time, Masih said he thought that was the end of it. It wasn’t.
“Five days later, the local cleric came to our house, followed by an angry mob, and dragged my wife away,” he said, recalling the incident that took place in June 2009. They beat her, ripped off her clothes and accused her of insulting the prophet. Then they locked her up in a house until the police came to take her away.”

In an interview with NBC News, Qari Muhammed Salem, the local cleric in Ittan Walli, accused Masih of lying. “I talked to everyone who witnessed this incident and she is guilty,” he said. “She confessed to the crime in front of the entire village and then she begged for forgiveness,” he insisted.
“She even told me she said these things in rage during a heated argument and would never think of blasphemy,” he said. Salem said he called the police to lock her up, only to protect her, because the angry mob would have killed her.
Najma Yousaf, a sister of Bibi, still lives in the family home in Ittan Walli, a rural village of approximately 10,000 inhabitants, almost all Muslim. “I’m not afraid to live in our house,” she said. “The villagers are all very nice with me, my husband and our children. They are angry with my sister.”
Bibi, 45, is the first woman condemned to death under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws. While no one has ever been executed, most of the accused – all men – languish in prison alone and forgotten. Human rights groups point out that the law is a convenient way to settle scores, often among the Christian community who total about 2 million of Pakistan’s 175 million people.
In a statement released from New York, Human Rights Watch, called for Pakistan’s government to immediately introduce legislation to repeal the blasphemy laws.
“Asia Bibi has suffered greatly and should never have been put behind bars,” said Ali Dayan Hasan, senior South Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch. “The injustice and fear the blasphemy law spawns will only cease when this heinous law is repealed.”
Other minority groups are targets too. The Ahmadis, an Islamic minority sect that has been declared non-Muslim under Pakistani law, are often the victims of intimidation and violence and incarcerated under the blasphemy laws. In addition, they are prime targets of the Pakistani Taliban who, in the past, have blown up their mosques, killing hundreds, according to Human Rights Watch.

Bibi’s lawyer has filed an appeal with the High Court in Lahore and Pakistan’s President Asif Zardari may consider an unconditional pardon if the appeals process takes too long.
So far, the Minister for Minority Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti submitted a report on the case to Zardari. He concluded that the charges were baseless. In an interview with NBC News, he said that Bibi could be released on appeal in the high court. “We should wait for the court proceedings but if the court delays then the president may pardon her on the basis that she is innocent,” he said.
Bhatti is well aware of the possible consequences of an acquittal. Judges have been assassinated for freeing victims and several accused persons have been gunned down inside prisons or outside courtrooms as they walked free.
“We will protect Asia and her entire family,” the minister said. “No harm will come to them.”
Sidra, Bibi’s 18-year-old daughter, takes her younger sisters to the jail every Tuesday to visit their mother. “My mother tells us not to cry and to be strong,” she said. “But now, my mother is crying, so how can we be strong.”
With media reports of a possible pardon for Bibi, hard line Islamic groups have held demonstrations in cities across Pakistan. They’ve warned Zardari of a severe backlash if he commutes her death sentence.
At one rally, organized by “The Movement for the Protection of the Prophet’s Honor” denounced any attempt to change the law. “We are ready to sacrifice our life for the prophet,” they chanted.

Freedom of speech is a fundamental human right that is denied every day across the world in Islamic societies. It is the plan and desire of Islamists to spread this totalitarian view until every human being on the face of the earth is bound by Islam and suffers the same fate as this woman if they dare exercise their right to freedom of speech.
Not to mention the fact that the original comment actually is the same bigotted sentiment that caused the issue in the first place, just with roles reversed. Sad that we, who are supposed to be such literate, thoughtful, and well meaning Americans, can be so blind to our own prejudices and stoop to the same class-oriented behavior that we were supposed to have jettisoned fifty years ago. Coral -- Muslims can't befriend non-Muslims because Muhammad tells them not to do so several places in the Koran. He tells them that if they make friends with non-Muslims then they themselves are no longer Muslims. Accordingly, no pious Muslim who believes the word of Allah will ever truly be a friend to a Christian, Jew, Hindu, agnostic, atheists, etc. because to do so would consign them to hell as a non-Muslim. So as you say, how can we ever get along since their God tells them not to ever be our friend?

I don't think that Islam states that a Muslim cannot be friends with Jews or Christians. My boyfriend is Muslim, non-radical, of course, and he wants to marry me. I am Catholic, and I will not convert to Islam. Therefore, I believe, from personal experience, that you are bringing up an inflammatory statement. If that statement does appear in the Koran, it is likely taken out of context.

Laws against insulting religion (or government or nation) are a serious problem in large parts of the world and need to be seriously addressed. Such laws violate free speech, freedom of worship, and are often used as an excuse to perpetrate or even murder perfectly innocent human beings (this story being a case in point). In this case a woman was accused of insulting Islam, not because she really did, but because very wicked and evil individuals (not all Pakistanis or Muslims) are telling lies about her to settle a private, petty grudge. (They should reflect on how that will affect their fate on the last day).
This is a very real issue that needs to be addressed on a global level, particularly in the Muslim world. It requires a serious response, not just condemnation of an entire religion or people, nor a refusal to get involved because of some lame 'moral equivalency' justification that various groups have dealt out this same kind of persecution in various places at various times.
How do you convince the government of a largely devout (but not necesssarily well educated or open minded) people to eliminate anti-blasphemy laws, without making the populace fear that the intent of repeal is to encourage blasphemy and that the government is therefore acting in defiance of God?

Any Religion that advocates death and murder in the name of the religion is probably a BAD RELIGION! ISLAM ADVOCATES VIOLENCE AGAINST ALL INFIDELS (any non-muslim). Yes, we as Christians need to befriend non-Christians. We need the opportunities to witness to them. But this does not mean compromising our beliefs (and practice of those beliefs) to do so. Things need to be in the right order. First be grounded in God's word. Secondly, surround yourself with the fellowship of other like-minded believers. Thirdly, go out and witness to the unsaved without participating in their evil deeds. This is the line you cannot cross. If the unsaved attempt to draw you into their practices (sin), you need to truly be able to respond as David did...
The second part of your question raises a number of other issues. Are you interested in winning this guy to the Lord? Or are you interested in this guy and using the excuse of "winning him to the Lord" as justification for seeing or dating him? The following passage needs to be considered regarding this issue...

Im gonna have to agree with mkr32208. Muslims, disliking Christians? Ok, Most Christians dislike people that dont at least believe in god. Go up to a Christian and tell them your a satanist, see what kinda reaction you get. Im Wiccan and get crap for it. Point being, is someone is always gonna "hate" you for what you believe in. Beth, you're grossly misinterpreting that passage. It's talking about being a lot more than just 'friends' with unbelievers (though I realize a lot of people today may feel comfortable with doing that with just friends). Throughout the Bible Christians are actually encouraged to be friends with non-Christians (in the world but not of it), but that passage is telling us not to marry non-Christians.
And PenelopeB, from that passage, your boyfriend wants to marry you by the same religious logic that you want to marry him: ignoring your respective scriptures.

Coral - actually, I've known several Muslim males over the years -- females too. Actually went out with Muslim guy a couple of times too. He was amazingly well educated and polite and I didn't even know he was Muslim until our second date! He didn't make a big deal over it. Ironically our fundamental "differences" were about music -- not religion!
As to interpreting or misinterpreting the Bible -- sorry, that's impossible. My whole point is it can be interpreted any way you want. That's the problem. It contradicts itself, it's mistranslated and, to top it all off, the only parts that are considered "legit" are the ones a bunch of men wanting to keep power in their own hands decided on back in 325 AD (Council of Nicea). Following that, anyone not following the Christian "party line" were systematically labeled heretics and exterminated. For interest, I suggest a reading of the Gnostic Gospels.

note the adjective "hard line" in describing these groups - in other words, that is exactly what they are, "radical" ... the majority of muslims are appalled by this ruling.
"All" is the word for the weak minded who lump everything into one category. One must remember the 20th century when over 200 MILLION perished by the hands and the politics of Atheists (Communist governments such as Stalin and Mao's, the Khmer Rouge, the Shining Path). It isn't religion that is sick, it is some people in religion. Most of these sorts of things are condemned by the mainstream of religious figures.

If the "majority" of Muslims are appalled by this ruling, let them stand up and be counted in the world- wide media. Decry the ruling on public radio, TV and in newspapers and demonstrate against the absurdity of their fellow Muslims. This is why America has a free press.

Laws against insulting religion (or government or nation) are a serious problem in large parts of the world and need to be seriously addressed. Such laws violate free speech, freedom of worship, and are often used as an excuse to perpetrate or even murder perfectly innocent human beings (this story being a case in point). In this case a woman was accused of insulting Islam, not because she really did, but because very wicked and evil individuals (not all Pakistanis or Muslims) are telling lies about her to settle a private, petty grudge. (They should reflect on how that will affect their fate on the last day).
This is a very real issue that needs to be addressed on a global level, particularly in the Muslim world. It requires a serious response, not just condemnation of an entire religion or people, nor a refusal to get involved because of some lame 'moral equivalency' justification that various groups have dealt out this same kind of persecution in various places at various times.

The problem with this idea is that Christianity preaches intolerance and hatred pretty much as much as anything you naming here. Read the bible. As far as "personal hatred" is concerned, the Quran has about 50 verses out of 6,000 total talking about war - not personal violence, but war. Specifically, war is prohibited except in defense. I've read both, not by personal but professional choice and you see more hate in the quran than the bible by 1000%. If you can't see it, you're not reading it. There's a LOT more than 50 versus in the quran that preach hate, murder and intolerance of any other religion. It's important to remember that when a person is a Atheist and commits such acts as genocide it isn't necessarily because they are an Atheist. It has more to do with political and personal ideology. So keep in mind that no group of Atheists have ever committed genocidal acts simply because their targets were religious. The leaders and groups you quoted did so for political ideology or personal ideology which is much more complex than religious barbarism. We do, however, have many instances in our history were one religious group slaughtered another simply because they believed in a different divine entity.

You can't say the Old Testament doesn't count, but the New Testament does. Churches use text out of the Old Testament. Many Christians read the Psalms, but there is undoubtedly a LOT of violence in the Old Testament. If it was intended for us to discard it, then it wouldn't be in there. And if you want to discard one half of entire Bible for Christianity as many Christians do, then maybe...just maybe it isn't a stretch of the imagination that many Muslims living in cultures that are not so behind the times that they are basically medieval discard those seven lines you pointed out. I find it interesting that only people like you and radical Muslims seem to zero in on and take seriously those particular passages.
Christianity was not always a wholesome forthright religion. Like Islam, Christianity has blood on it's hands too. Who has more or less is irrelevant. The difference is Christianity moved forward, adapted, and was able to do so in a country that gives it's citizens certain unalienable rights not based on the Bible. The West screws up. A lot. But we do go back and make efforts to try to appeal to the Middle East and Muslim world. When we're accused of being intolerant, we try. These guys really need to understand just how bad clinging to these obnoxious, archaic traditions are. They need to understand that they can think that Islam is the right and true religion without going so far out of their way to insult the rest of the world with their backwards practices. Because they make Islam look stupid. They're insulting their prophet by inviting stereotypes of their violence each and every chance they seem to get. The suicide bombings, honor killings, protesting being called violence in cartoon form with further violence... etc.
It's really hard to get behind these guys when they sentence people to death on hearsay witch hunting. When we say in the US and Europe not to stereotype all Muslims, that they're not all radicals (and it's very true, it's very possible to be a secular Muslim, look at say, Aasif Mandvi of The Daily Show), they make the entire Muslim religion, and in particular, Arab race, look suspicious in any given situation.
It's kinda like where we're at with the Democrats and the Republicans. The Democrats keep giving in, giving in, giving in, and the Republicans say that they're not, they're going forward with the same evil agenda, or whatever, and then when the time comes to wonder why Democrats haven't gotten anything done, it's because they tried to play the game fairly and give the GOP a chance. And then the GOP wonders why the Democrats didn't just force their agenda after the fact. And then everyone ends up looking like the bad guy. (If you really want to argue with that, the facts are against you, the last session of Congress saw a filibustering record, and Orrin Hatch came out recently and blamed the Obama administration and the Democrats for not pushing the plans they wanted through.)
I think ultimately, it's not necessarily Islam or Christianity or any religion that's to blame in cases like this, I think religion is generally used as an excuse to justify anything anyone does, and that any act, good or bad, done in the name of religion, was likely to have occurred anyway. If they weren't segregating people for being Christian in that particular reason, they probably would've found something else wrong with her. This whole death sentence thing sounds like it started because of some random argument, so there's either high emotions at play, or, as I said before, there was something they didn't like about this woman, because you don't give your friends death sentences for repeating insults that you yourself have just used unless there's underlying spite, permanent or temporary.

It goes to show how far we have really come since we got here. We "can't just all get along". In my fifty years of life I have never believed that any one religion should wield the power they think they can. I have studied up on a lot of religions and I would think Buddhism, teaching of harmony and coexistence, then Christianity, great book of morals, would definitely top the list. But I choose to assume that man has the capability of good morals. Although some religious boneheads choose to twist these/their books of religion to there own advantage, for their own gain that's just mankind. In the end they will end up killing each other and as was said earlier in this post whomever there god/Ala/Buddha/Christ will sort them out accordingly on the deeds they performed in their name.
Because honestly you can turn anything to your own needs but they all basically preach the same thing- Live life and treat others as you want to be treated- it should pay off in the end..

I think you are missing Levi777's point about the relationship of the OT to Christianity. The OT is God dealing with Israel. It was God's agreement with Israel. Jesus stated that He didn't come to abolish the law and the prophets (OT), but to fulfill it. The OT shows us that no one can keep the law. That is where the NT (God's agreement with all men), Jesus, and grace steps in. We can't keep the law, but Jesus can and He did for us. Once we accept the free gift offered to us by His work on the cross, its our job to love God and love others. He stated that all the law and the prophets hinges on this one thing: love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. The OT is in the Bible because its full of types and pictures of what Jesus fulfilled and what He will fulfill. The OT also shows us God's wrath toward sin...and also His undying love for all His creatures. We don't pick and choose what we like in the OT, we read it to try an get a meager understanding of this great God...

Lime is right on the money. To say that because a person who may be Christian has commited violence, does not imply that they committed it in motivation of their religion. In the case of these violent acts being committed by Muslims, they very clearly declare that they are at war with infidels and that all non-believers should be killed in the name of islam. In addition, they use violence, rape, and even murder to subjugate lower classes (especially women). Show me evidence of this in any CURRENT advanced Christian culture. If you want to go back in history, you will find that the acts commited by the "Church" were really politically driven by Monarchs who manipulated the religion to their advantage to control the uneducated masses and to feed their hunger for land and wealth. The "Crusades" and the inquisition really had very little to do with Christianity - which is also why the Protestants broke away from the Catholic Church - and more to do with subjigation of people and the conquering of new lands in the names of the kings of England, France, and Spain.
In stark contrast, if you look at the countries where the country is governed by Islam, they have taken countries that were advanced and prosperous, and they have driven them back into the stone age. Women were doctors, teachers, even engineers in Afghanistan before the Taliban took over in the 1990's. Then, in the name if Allah - as taught the psychotic, and power hungry madman, Muhammad, they executed thousands of women, often after rape and torture, simply for existing and living a normal modern life. Jesus Christ, the Messiah, came and died for all of mankind to live (in eternal life). Judaism became obsolete since Christ fulfilled and completed the testament. Some 600 years later, all of a sudden an 'angel' (of darkness) appears to Mohammed and seemingly refutes the fulfillment of Jewish prophesy in Christ and adds half-truths into the message and boom, Islam is born.
I'm glad no one again likes to cite the Crusades out of context to bash Christendom. They always fail to mention it was the Mohammedans who invaded and converted/killed Christians across Northern Africa and into southern Europe from the 8th to the 10th centuries BEFORE Christians in Europe finally rallied to stand up to the bullying, blood-thirsty Muslims and deign to take-back the Holy Land. Countless Christians were killed en route to pilgrimmages to the Holy Land for centuries, and the Muslims at one point even walked through the streets of Rome. It's not as if Christians retaliated and stood up after a meeting or Mass and said, "Time to destroy peace."

The sitution like that is similar to what happen in here; christians "are being tortued", means that many churches are closed by goverment and Islamic Organization, called FPI (Front Pembela Islam) dan HTI (Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia). I never have seen the corellation between peace and Islam, indeed. Moreover, can you believe, when the moslem staat to pray in Mosque, the speaker play noisy sound everyday, whereas when christian start to pray in church quietly, suddenly the FPI or HTI try to stop it?? Not everyone believes in one God a long time ago people believed in many gods and they got persecuted by the christians much like the christians are getting persecuted by the Muslims in this way. if you look at the wars the to groups fought, the majority of wars Christians were the aggressors in with other religions was with the Muslims during the Crusades. All others were started by the others sides or where against other Christians. Islam on the other hand expanded rapidly and violently over a 200 years period after its founder died and has violated their own laws on the matter of their treatment of Christans, Jews and Hindus, all of which are considered people of the book (to be left in peace.)

Don't remember the days of the inquistion much do you? Or the forced conversions of many states during the early expansion of Christianity. Nearly all religions expanded rapidly and violently against the other religions established at the time.

Maybe later on in the 15th-17th century, when those people in power called themselves christians. For millenia it was the other way around, Jews and Christians were persecuted by the greeks, romans, and others because they refused to believe in their multi-gods.
We all need to quit arguing over whos way of living (whether religeous or not) is better. Athiests and agnostics can easily turn to violence and the persecution of the religeous as easily as it is the other way around. If you, as an athiest, feel angry at religeous people for being religeous and think the world is better off without them you are thinking exactly the same as these radical and hard-line religeous persons think. You're no better than them.
@Bisaber. You need to read more Church history. List the "states" that were subject to forced conversions in the early expansion of Christianity -- say the first three centuries A.D. Then compare that with the first three centuries of the expansion of Islam. No comparison! Persuasion vs. the Sword.
Intolerance is oppresion and oppression is tyranny and those of the Muslim faith have repeatedly demonstrated that it is intolerant and tyrannically oppressive towards all things non-Muslim. I thank "My" God every day for the progress that we have made. With all that is wrong with our world, any progress is better than government hanging people over religious matters.
Those of you who say that christianity is just as violent as Islam are horribly mistaken. Historically Islam has been on a Jihad for more then a 1000 years against the rest of the non-islamic world. Many people claim that the crusades were an example of Christian agression, but this is fundementally wrong. The Cusades were begun because The Christian Byzantine Empire was being attacked by the Muslim hordes (and had been for 100s of years) and the Byzantines asked the Western Christians to help them defend themselves. Also Christian pilgrims were being killed on their way to holy sites. It is also important to remember that the only reason the Muslims controlled the Holy Lands,in the first place, was because they stole it from Eastern Orthadox Cristians when they went on an early Jihad. The Crusades were far from a Christian aggression. They were only defending themselves after being laid under seige for more then a 1000 years.
The 'Christianization' of the Germanic tribes and the Scandinavians also come to mind. Just because a king or chieftan elected (usually for political reasons) to become Christian, does not mean the rest of the people came along willingly. And you don't have to go so far back. The conquistadors did a fine job with their missionary zeal. And I hate to keep bringing it up, but Northern Ireland is a quite recent example of christian 'tolerance and charity'.
Don't get me wrong - I don't condone what some muslims have been doing just because some christians have done likewise. I'm just saying: take a good hard look in the mirror before you start throwing stones. Very few 'christians' ever really follow their Golden Rule. If they did, I believe this world would be a much better place. Then and only then can they point to themselves as an example that should be followed.
Nothing against her personally but it's good to see when christians get a little karma thrown at them. No other case in human history has caused more pain suffering and death than Christian religions.

I have read the Quaran and it is not much different than the bible. the only difference is those, over there in Afganistan they don't have a clue on how to read it. They take everything for face value and that is the problem. There is One God and they chose to call Him Allah. "So it is writting, so it shall be." One thing I have noted about those posters who attempt to defend an atrocity (islamic intolerance and violence toward, apparently, everything) by throwing out some example of ancient history or falsely claiming that an event (McVeigh) was based on religious belief. These people have no sense of responsibilty or accountability, they are the same people who state that a murderous rapist should be excused because he came from a broken home. They side with the evil, make excuses by pointing fingers elsewhere and do so from a misguided sense that they're the superior, tolerant ones. Their attitude would change drastically if they were personally confronted with, and became victims of, those whom they chose to defend.
If they survived, they would be the ones clamouring and screaming the loudest for draconian laws and legislative actions against the perpetrators whom they currently defend.

In response to the question of why more muslims didn't come to the aid of Pakistan, well, you have to understand that Islam isn't universal. The Arabs look down on the pakistanis as inferior, the shi'ites hate the sunnis and most all hate the kurds. Islam is essentially tribal and primitive by nature. Loyalties are to the clan or village rather than the country.

Profiling does not neccessarily have anything to do with race. If done correctly, it is based on certain behaviors, body language, micro-expressions, etc. rather than ethnicity. I profile my students all the time, and I am usually correct in my assessments. The Isreali's have this down to a fine art. No backscatter x-rays, no intrusive and offensive patdowns...rarely even a need for metal detectors and dogs.

Question for everyone. If our government made a law that ALL women should wear a scarf around their face, and also a law that mocking any religion is punishable by death, what would YOU do? I find it odd that people brag about being atheist, as though that makes them intellectually superior. Many gifted, talented and highly intelligent people believed in and continue to have a concept of a higher power. Perhaps it is adherence to 'fundamentalist' religious principles that causes such grief. Fundamentalists of every stripe ( and that fundamentalism can be in science, medicine, etc) are essentially closed-minded and fearful, dogmatic and monodirected. It becomes tragic when the fundamentalist forces his/her belief system upon others, usually by violence.
You can equate Christian fundamentalists with Muslim ones when Southern Baptists and Pentacostals strap bombs on their kids to blow up innocent people and their leaders endorse it. Although there have been isolated instances of American christians justifying violence by religion, look at the reaction of the leadership and the majority of the followers. When there is violence against abortion clinics, Christian leaders, including fundamentalist who condemn abortions and are actively seeking legal means to close them, overwhelmingly condemn the violence. When Muslims commit violence and seek to justify it religiously, there is support from religious leaders and such a large percent of their followers that those who oppose it often fear to speak out.
Incidently, for our aethiest and agnostic posters, you might want to check out Timothy McVeigh, he was a self-proclaimed agnostic, one of yours. Stalin, Lenin, and Mao were aethiests. Personally, I would include Hitler because he not only killed 6 + million Jews, he killed several million others in his death camps, many of them Christians, and he did not practice any form of religion. (Ooops, he was into occult practices, guess that lets aethiests off the hook for him, but it also proves he wasn't Christian.)
The point is that it is not religion, lack of religion, or even fundamentalist religion that is the problem. There is something in modern day Islam that allows large numbers (I did not say ALL) to either endorse or look the other way to violence and intolerance, to justify it to themselves. Quoting the past, good or bad, does not change the present, and the present is where we live. As a Christian, I know there are things in the past that were not right, but although I can learn from them, I can't change them. Whether you believe the Bible or not, it is hard to argue with "by their fruits you shall know them."

Do you really believe the historical Jesus (read his words in the New Testament) would have advocated a wealthy church that forbid priests marriage and had many child molestors for centuries throughout the world, covered it up pope after pope, gathered gold and money and power from the poor of the earth, and built the vatican on sin money---$ fines for sinning, and 'indulgences' (freedom to sin for a fee--such as Sinatra's so-called annullment leaving Nancy Sinatra good and mad at him and the church since the church had made her into a 'bastard' by her understanding? Where is the Son of God in all this? Looking passively on and saying, "Boys will be boys?" I doubt it! He gave His life for the group of people who would follow Him through the centuries with their whole hearts, and he said the numbers of those saved would be 'few' for the "Way is broad that leads to destruction" but the "road is narrow that leads to eternal life". Whenever the Roman church has been in the ascendancy during the centuries, the true church, Christ's remnant of faithful believers, have had to go underground. Just because there are radical groups out there that do horrible things in the name of their god it doesnt mean that the whole religion should be condemned for it. That goes for any religion including both Islam and Christianity. Yeah Christians did horrible things in the past. Spanish Inquistian, witch burning, the crusades. Muslims had their share of horrible deeds too. Radical christians and radical muslims and still do horrible things in the name of their god. But the things we have to remember is that even though there are muslims and christians that are bad people, there are also many very good and innocent people in those faiths too. As for this poor woman. Its obvious that it was mostly a case of a small village hating the person that was 'different' than everyone else. It probably got to the point where they would've done just about anything to justify bringing an angry mob to her doorstep. But tell me this. Besides the whole blasphemy law, cant you just see something similar happening to this in a small rural town in the US? If a muslim family moved into a one church town in the US dont you think the townsfolk would treat that family in a similar fashion? The children would probably be brutally bullied at school with the teachers maybe even egging them on. It would be next to immpossible for the parents to find a job. And even if they got through all that their neighbors would probably go out of thir way to make them uncomfortable maybe even sending them death threats. I'm just saying that intolerance, hatred and cruelty are not just practiced by people in foreign countries with different religions. America started down that road a long time ago with regard to Christian monuments. Haven't you heard of the controversy surrounding the dessert cross memorial to US Soldiers? How many Christian monuments and activities have been routed out of our public places in the name of separation of church and state? Even in our own country, it is permissible, and sometimes encouraged, to denigrate the Christian faith or religion (whichever term you prefer) as well as other non-Islamic religions. But beware taking the same liberties with Islam. Our freedom of speech is already curtailed. Our schools can teach classes on Islam in the name of tolerance and education, but mention God or the Bible and you are labeled as some religious extremist out to evangelize the world. Americans need to wake up and realize that the poor puppy they are supposedly protecting from the big mean Christians is actually the rabid dog intent on devouring the freedoms we now enjoy and reducing this great nation to that which most everyone in this chain finds abhorrent.

@ Old dude, i find that very offensive, i am a Catholic. the only true christian religion is Roman Catholicism, all of you protestants are heretics, and are going to hell. that is besides the point. islam is NOT a religion of piece, it is a cult of hatred and savagery. i dont buy the whole "obama is converting us to islam" thing, but still, we dont allow mormans to marry 7 wives like their religion permits, so why should we allow the muslims to build a monument to their cult at the very spot where they attacked us and killed 3000 people? for them, it would be like they finally conquered us. why else do they need the mosque at ground zero? why cant they build it on the outskirts of NYC? im sure no one would have a problem with it as much if it werent a little game they are playing of "oh look, we blew up your towers. and now we are rebuilding a MOSQUE where they once stood! we have conquered the infidels, muhahahahahaahah" god, can no one else see this????

I suggest you stop trying to politicise this and instead educate yourselves on the situation and probable results of appeasement-usually the obvious one. There is also a stealth jihad, non-violent, merely all-pervasive and insidious. These jihadi's are wolves in sheep's clothing, they say whatever is necessary to further the globalization of Islam. Peaceful muslims cannot go against this since it is what the religion is about.

Just reading along, and discovered that President Obama 1.) is a Muslim and 2.) wants to make the US into a Muslim country. Gee, some of the people who have commented here are so brilliant, they know these facts without a doubt, I guess. Also, the plans are for a Muslim cultural center a few blocks from Ground Zero -- NOT a mosque AT Ground Zero. My mother always said "Look before you leap "- in other words, people -- get your damn facts straight before you jump in with both feet and prove your ignorance! And also - to those of you who judge people for following a religion that some of them have no choice but to follow - in some places, not following means death, as we have seen many times. And - a parting word - it's the fanatics in any religion who do horrible things in the name of whatever deity they worship. IN my very humble opinion, religion causes a lot more problems than it ever solved. If people want to believe in myths and fairy tales, let them - I'm very content to pass on the whole deal.
